If you look, I was not saying the V8 is better, but explaining why I thought EB owners that complain about gas mileage have a right to feel deceived when they don't get at or even near the advertised mpg. It is the only engine in these trucks that had that problem. To take it a step further, since many drivers are unable to get close to the posted mpg, it could be argued that Ford is fooling EPA.

Regardless of how they are driven, some vehicles that are identical won't get advertised mileage, some will, and some even get better. It's been this way forever. Some of them that don't get advertised mileage have something wrong with them, some just don't. It happens. Some can be fixed, some can't.

By the way, I *DID* find this on Ford's website, under "Additional Disclosures":

2. EPA-estimated city/hwy mpg. See fueleconomy.gov for fuel economy of other engine/transmission combinations. Actual mileage will vary.
It is the only engine in these trucks that had that problem.
No sir. We have some threads here from 5.0 owners that are getting crappy mileage too.

That disclosure has been there since they started posting mpg on stickers. To me there should have been more on the EB. There are no ways near the number of 5.0, 5.4, 3.7 or 6.2 owners that have posted that they feel deceived. It is what it is.

Gentlemen,

I get frustrated to no end that I keep getting told how to drive the truck. I have set the truck on cruise control at 55 mph on dead flat roads in the central valley of California (no wind) and the truck will not exceed 19 mpg. The EPA test requires a long duration at 65 mph. Whenever I set the cruise control at 65, the truck barely gets 18 mpg.

GLC has it correct, in my opinion, that vehicles that do not get the advertized mileage could have something wrong with them.

95% of my driving is city and I get just under 15 in my FX4. If I let the Mrs. Drive it for a while she gets the avg up to the mid 16s. On the hwy, I can knock down 21-22 if I keep it under 65.

You also have the issue of low energy crap California gas. Nothing gets good mileage out there. In my many visits, I've found that Valero and Chevron get the best, Costco and Arco the worst.

Don't get frustrated, just get over it........The EPA mileage ESTIMATES are for COMPARISON ONLY. They do not compensate for wind resistance, inclines, driver habits, etc. Any reasonable person would never expect to get the mileage the EPA gets on a simulator dyno. To expect that is completely unreasonable. If one does happen to get those figures, they would have to be very lucky in most cases. I don't get those figures and don't expect it. No one else in their right mind should expect it either.
If you want high mileage, buy a Prius and expect me to run you off of the road..........especially if it has an OBAMA sticker on it.

You can deceive or lie to someone by not telling them all the facts, knowing that they may make false assumptions. This is what I see.
There are two whole pages on the cluster display that show fuel mileage. How much more info do they need? If someone can't understand the higher the bar graph is the better mileage they are getting they probably aren't smart enough to be driving in the first place.

That does nothing to control what the engine consumes, only records it.

You guys continue to distort the dialog. It's the fact that many divers are unable to achieve the advertised mileage, not that they wanted some super number. Just something responsibly close to what was in the sticker. Read the posts without colored mind set.

I still say that in almost all of these cases the problem is the driver. I have 56,000+ on my truck and the lifetime average is 16.9MPG. The sticker on my truck showed a combined average to be 17MPG. I'd say that is pretty much spot on especially considering I drive fast, pull trailers, drive off road, let the truck warm up, almost always lead the pack away from stoplights, use craptacular E10 and do most of the other things that hurt mileage. However, I do used the cruise, I don't fluctuate speed while cruising, keep my tires filled and don't keep a bunch of extra junk in the truck to carry around.

I have owned 4 F-150s since 2001 and this one gets much better mileage than any of the others. It gets a solid 3+MPG over my 2005 which was the closest to compare it to and I drive my 2011 harder.

I would bet a six pack that I could get better mileage out of a truck that a person is complaining about than the person doing the complaining.

I just double checked my sticker again on the truck and it shows 18 combined. Guess What? 18.0 Average in 21k miles.. Ford must have gave us good truck's Wookie or we know how to drive em.. Which one is it?

My ego wants to take credit but I don't see that as the case. Even better, I have the original CAC on my truck exactly as it came from the factory. So I have a truck that should have the two worst problems for an EB and I don't. The only thing wrong with my truck was the factory spark plugs were gapped a little on the high side. But I was able to change them for less than $30 (including the two beers I drank) in less than 45 minutes. This fixed the slight shake the truck had at idle and the occasional bucking at partial throttle.

The problem with forums is they make everyone an e-hypochondriac. People hear of a problem and automatically assume the worst even though it is no where close to being true.

^This.

In my experience, Ford trucks seem to suffer a worse mpg 'penalty' from crappy fuel compared to other vehicles. And no, I don't have scientific proof. Just an observation from years of ownership of multiple vehicles and occasional trips where I filled up out of the state.
