My V6 is also one that has never got very good mileage, and when we switched to low energy content 10% ethanol fuel, it got a lot worse.

I get about 14 - 15 city and 17 - 18 highway.

This is a'99 Supercab with automatic, 2wd, 3.55 gears and 265/70/16 tires.

I agree that with a heavy truck, you need to put your foot into it more on a low powered motor. Plus the V6 is older technology.

FWIW, my father-in-laws 5.7L Chevy Avalanche 4wd gets better mpg than my truck. As ugly as it is, the Avalanche might be a useful storm chaser rig.

Yeah, that helps having planned lights in the Woodlands too, unlike back home (Brazoria County...West Columbia to be exact) where it can take you 10 minutes to travel 2 miles through town with the lights.
Evidently mine is a 27 gallon tank. I think the 6.5 foot bed gets the 30 gallon but don't quote me on that. I know about Brazoria county and I am pretty sure I have been on that same stretch where the lights are not only timed by retards, but the speed limit is 30ish I believe?

As for the storm chaser, my wifes cousin also has an avalanche with the 5.7 and it gets pretty decent mileage from what I understand. Supposedly, GM trucks get the best gas mileage of any full size truck (5.3L vs. other 5L+ displacement engines) I like the idea of a new sport track. I really like the looks of them personally. I think someone on the site wasn't to thrilled with the vehicles performance, however these days with electronic throttle control I don't think one can get an honest feel for a vehicles performance as it take a few drive cycles for the computer to adapt to the drivers input.

If you want a new full size Ford crew cab truck, look for an 09 with the fuel economy package - its a 4x2 with a 4.6 3v, 6 speed auto, and 3.15 gears.

x2. They used to be called "SFE" but they recently decided to take off the stickers. Dealer may point you in the right direction

I'm a storm chaser and we are in need of a truck that doesn't use as much gas as a 5.4L that we use now.

smaller is not always better, I guess you're driving a loaded down heavy truck with crappy gears and you're driving it like you stole it, plus you've probably failed to do proper up keep

P.S. my supercharged 5.4's get better mileage than most V-6's do
