power loss especially in overdrive

i have recently gone on a long journey and after arriving at my destination...i can feel my truck is lacking in some pickup power and when i am in overdrive it seems to lose speed very easily on some minor hills....i have done the plugs and air filter....there is a small hesitation sometimes but most noticeable in overdrive....could this be as simple as the fuel filter or something more complicated?

sorry im a newbie....it's a '99 xlt regular cab and im not sure of the trans. axl ratio etc...it is only a 6 cylinder and has 170000kms on it....i am over my oil change limit by a few thousand.....

Please post the year and model of your truck, engine and transmission, axle ratio, miles on the truck, miles since the last "tuneup", and any mods.

if you have a manual trans, i usually don't upshift into 5th till 50mph. my 4.2 has plenty of power... maybe a tuneup would help your truck

look on your door jamb sticker and tell us the axle code. For me, riding 65 in overdrive and going up a hill i have to punch it. theres no momentum in that final drive ratio

Manual or automatic? What's the axle code on the door sticker?

Plugs and air filter are a start - other things to look at are fuel filter, plug wires, coil pack, and MAF cleaning. It's also possible the throttle body and PCV passages need cleaning. The converters may be starting to clog. Is the CEL on? If so, you need to get the OBD2 codes read.

I apologize for missing your reply.

I have no problem climbing steep grades with my 5 speed if I leave in 5th... most of the time I just go from 1st, 2nd, to 5th and stay in 5th all the way down to ~22 mph... but remember, I have 4.10s...

4.10s may be nice but at least my truck has a healthy diet of 80's Hondas and a few flatbeds for dinner, leaving her a couple hundred pounds under your overweight NBS
