What causes power loss?

Hi, all -

I have a '99 XL with about 150K miles on it. It has a manual transmission. Lately I've noticed that I don't seem to have the power I did. The engine is running smoothly as far as I can tell, and there are no check engine lights, but I seem to find myself staying in 3rd gear a little longer and downshifting to take even mild hills.

I just changed the air filter last night and haven't checked it yet, but what else should I check?

Thanks!

You need new plugs and wires.

FWIW, changes in weather can make a big difference.

Cool, dry winter weather with high barometric pressure makes much more power than hot, moist weather with low barometric pressure.

I can really feel a power loss on my truck on hot days.

That is for sure. I can tell the difference on the real hot dog days of summer when the humidity is 95% and the temperature is in the mid 90's. Sometimes, it feels like my truck is an old dog on those days.

Then again, I feel like a hot sweat pig on those days too.

Well, you've got COP (coil on plug), and I doubt any of them are bad at 95k. Just some plugs will do.

Also as a side fact, it never hurts to change the plugs earlier. For how much they cost, it can't hurt to spend a couple hours changing plugs.

2001, I'm not trying to give you a hard time, but why did you hijack a thread in the V-6 forum to ask about plug changes on a 5.4 V8?

I meant that for the v8 fella.

I think it's easier to change the plugs on my \/6 F150 than it is on my Roto-Tiller...

So you are telling me that you didnt make a post in "will your v6 peel/burn out"

If so you are lying its a few threads under this one.

i believe your responce was

"my v8 will spin 12" wide tires. i suggest gettin a v8"

now whats your reason in that? Just to say ohhh i got a v8?

how does it feel to be OWNED by a V6... id love sooooo much to drag your almighty 5.4 all over the lot. Guys like you make me sick.

its okay Trimble, when he throws his plugs or his cams fail, our tough-as-nail pushrod will simply pass him.

slow and steady wins the race
