using coolant?

what might be my problem... a few weeks ago my pickup got a CE light i looked and the coolant was dang near gone!

filled it up to a little over the max fill line on accident... the light went away... drove it it drove fine and everything... checked about a week later and it was almost on the add line...
both times i checked the level was in the morning before i started the pickup so there was no pressure.

i dont know wear it would be going... do you guys?
thanks boys!

may be the timing cover gasket and/or the intake seals. they were a common problem in the early years of the 4.2. i think they fixed them midyear 98.

start looking around under the hood and looking for coolant traces on the block also look for pooling under the truck where you park it. If all else fails and there is no evidence of a leak I would start checking and try to prevent the "hydro-lock" syndrome from happening. I would look at these before driving the truck anywhere else (personal suggestion)

Have you checked your oil.... if it looks lie choclate milk or you smell coolant in it your headed down the hydrolock road... park it and start tearing down the top of your engine. If its not knocking yet your probably still in good shape.

if no coolant in oil and no puddle start it up and let it get good and warm then check for leaks on hoses. sometimes theyll just get pinholes in them that wont leak unless system is under pressure.

Good luck let us know what you find out

I had a weak hose clamp on mine - where the top hose connected to the engine. It took a while before I could actually see evidence of the leak, but I was wondering where my coolant was going. The POS factory spring clamps can crack. Give me a worm clamp any time. Grab the hose and if you can twist it, the clamp is not doing its job.

ok it sound like you need to do the usual checks, check your oil dip stick for the chocolate milk symptom, after that look at hoses and the block for signs of leaks. you might not have lost any coolant, but that does not mean that the coolant did not solidify and seal itself temporally. You need to figure it out before things get worse.

checked the oil this morning before i started it to come to school. oil level was fine and no milky color... looked like any other time i checked the oil...

started it up and all was good went back into the house to let it warm up a bit cause it was 12 degrees here this morning and come back out and the god damn check engine light is on. its still on i got to school and checked the coolant level again. it was still the same. i dont know im baffled...

And GLC thank you for the info... i will check it after school. hopefully that is all this will amount to is a faulty clamp
thanks again boys! i apreciate it!

Sounds like it might be the notorious 171 and 174 codes about banks 1 and 2 being lean. I know those are the codes I get after the temperature changes drastically while the truck has been sitting.
