How often to change synthetic

I have 10,000 miles on my truck now. I've used dino oil the entire time and always changed at 3k. I've decided to try out full synthetic and was curious, should I keep changing at 3k or wait a little longer?

You can wait a little longer. Mercedes running full synthetic, we suggest oil changes at about 7,500 or 6 months. Also depends a lot on driving habits, and driving conditions.

If you use something like Amsoil, you could wait til 10k with easy driving. IMHO, I have a hard time letting ANY oil sit in my truck for 10k. And I wouldn't let it sit for over 6 months, no matter the mileage. My 2 cents.

This may be a dumb question but Im gonna ask anyway. I have basicly the same truck here and I have 4,000 miles on mine. Do I have to wait til I get a certain amount of miles before I switch to synthetic?

Stay within your warranty period of 5K miles for changes, since your drivin an 08, & still have much warranty left!........

True. I was thinking about going with 5k anyway. Since I did 3k with dino 5k should be perfect for synth.

On a side note, DO NOT BUY THE 5 QUART JUGS!! Yes, you'll save about 10 bucks by buying one of them along with an extra quart. But, they are IMPOSSIBLE to use and oil spills all over when refilling.

I believe Ford only requires 7500 mile changes on the newer models with any oil. If you are going to run full synthetic, might as well take advantage of what you're allowed.

My 2008 manual says every 5k not 7500.

And MercedesTech, I did use a funnel. The jugs are too tall and have to be held about 2 feet from the funnel. Doesn't make it too easy.

I gotcha. Guess I am more used to em, no big deal. Although, I did notice Mobil 1 synthetic jugs have some spiffy new spout. Makes it real easy, I didn't even use the funnel. It was kinda neat. Just FYI.

I generally by oil by the barrel anyways, far more savings !!

Cool. I'll try out the Mobil 1 next change. I used Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 5w20 (they didn't have any Mobil 1 5w20).

On my '02 4.2L I use Mobil 1 Synthetic and change it every 7500 miles. I am at 128K and the motor is in good shape. I would stick to using the nicer filter designed for longer use...Fram makes one which I've had good results with. Since you have a warranty you could use Mobile clean 6000(synthetic blend) and keep the changes at 5000 miles.

Do not just close your eyes and have faith in you oil being good for "X" amount of miles. Check your oil. Driving habits vary. Your driving habits will determine how much longer you can use your oil. For my truck, with a lot of idling and sitting in traffic, the Ford maintenance schedule says to change oil every 3,000 miles.
