Question Exhaust or Programmer?

I have an 01 Manl. 4.2L F150 and am thinking about getting either Exhaust or Programmer. I have done a lot of research on both and know what to get for either one, but still cant decide. Even though i will end up getting both later on, my question to you guys is which one gave you a more noticable performance gain?

Programmer first

If you want a new exhaust do what most do and buy a muffler that can be welded in place of the stock one. Much cheaper than a system and its the same thing.

First muffler I bought was a Bassani- $125, and instal was $125 to re run the exhaust in front of the tire. $250

Current system is a dual Cb extreme- $103 for both mufflers, $25 for mandrel 90* turn, and $245 for the install.

get the programmer first and then when money allows get the exhaust that you want. I wouldn't settle for just a muffler for the time being, thats a waste of 125+.

if you just replace the muffler you're only going to see 3-5 MAYBE.

if you wait save up and get your headers + hi flow cats + xpipe + mufflers you'll see 20+

tell me thats the same thing

even if you just replace the stock restrictive y pipe you'll see more than just replacing the muffler

I was always taught, if you're going to do something, do it right the first time.

if you get the muffler you get the sound and a little performance now, on top of that the tunes you get can take into account the exhaust and probably be able to utilize it better than if you went with the tuner first.

Hmm.....

Headers- $390+
Highflow cats- $120+
X pipe- $40+
mufflers- $103+

Paying to have it all installed will probably be about $500 +/-

Total- $1153 as a cheap rough guess.

Thats why it's called a custom exhaust, headers + high flow cats + X pipe + mufflers and you will see 20+

What do I know though: I have a 4.6 with high flow cats + X + Spintech Pro Streets,I had a Magnaflow cat-back and when I switched I had hp gains over the whole rpm band.

Paging Raptor...paging Raptor...You assistance is needed...

20 hp from an exhaust is questionable on the 4.2. Maybe if you had heads, cam, P&P intake, and a fully built block with the stock exhaust.

I have a tuner, Gibson headers, E-fans, CAI, Dual Cb extremes, and don't expect any more than a 25 hp gain from all.

guess I shouldn't have stuck my nose where I know nothing about, I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to the 4.2. With a V8, you can easily see 20+ with long tubes though
