My quick math says he's getting under 12 mpg.

FWIW, on low energy content fuel these trucks do not get good city mileage. IMO, anyone consistently getting anywhere close to 20 mpg has good quality (high energy content) fuel, drives almost only highway and has a light foot. And probably has a 5 speed.

If you drive city, and live in an area with bad air quality (with low energy fuel), have a supercab, bigger or stickier tires and an automatic, you will be lucky to get 20 mpg with a tailwind on the highway, and will probably get less than 15 mpg in the city. Maybe only 12 with big tires and an aggressive driver.

Couldn't agree more. I live in California and I have lots of stop and go traffic and to add, air quality is not that great. The freeway moves between 75 and 80 if its moving normal, or is just lots of traffic, so both ways waste fuel. Back when my truck was stock I was geting about 14 mpg, after my Fabtech 7.5" lift and 35" tires with chrome rims (lots more weight now and I did regear) I am only getting about 12.5 MPG.

I think I may be able to get better though. I have a JET Tuner and it is on the auto tune mode, which I think gives more power but worse mpg. Anyone know if it can do an economy mode? Also I love the sound of my muffler, so I'm a bit heavy on the pedal hehe

In California, all of our gas has a minimum of 5.6% ethanol. That hurts our mileage slightly. What really hurts mine is that here in The City, there is a stop light or stop sign on every corner. According to ScanGauge, I only get about 8-10 mpg when I'm idling through downtown traffic during the day. But when I actually get to go out on the highway for a good hour, highway mileage is always well into the 20's.

here in southdakota we have 10% ethanol in the regular and premium gas. i have a (read signiture) and it got 16 on BP gas. then i went to shell and tested it. first i got the cheep shell gas. it gained about a half mile per gallon. then i bought the exspensive stuff at shell. and it jumped it to 18.5mpg. my math tells me that that is 1.5mpg better over the cheep shell gas. that will allow me to go about 45 miles longer on a tank. it is worth the extra 30 cents a gallon.

This is where I am at. It's okay. But could be better. Like I said, city traffic kills mileage. You guys try sitting in your car for an hour, only to commute for 9 miles.

'07 4.2L V6

Notice the peaks at 25? I have actually gotten upwards of 27 on extended road trips where I was able to drive at freeway speeds for the entire tank.

It might be the same engine, but the electronics are different and yours is modded. It also may have something to do with how he drives it and HIS mods, if any.

i guess that is true. change stuff here and there in the ecu, and you probably can squeeze a few more out. im just ready to get my programmer this summer to help me make those 300+ mile trips to school and home less costly.

i gotts throw the BS flag on the 27 mpg... i could belive it if you were driving out of the mountains's (downhilll) but he said freeway speeds the whole trip... and im sure he dont have a 400 mile downhill trip... so im gunna have to throw the bs flag on this one... sry... i just cant see it happening... even if he did have mods... to get that you would have to be driving slow and in OD the hole time... i just cant see it happening... sry

youd be suprised what driving at 65 mph for a long time can do to mileage.

There are roads here, like the 99 & I-5 in California or the 15 in Nevada, which are flat for very long distances. My local trips which go from San Francisco, across the Bay Bridge, then down the 580 to the 680, and then back to San Francisco from the South Bay, net at 27 MPG: all flat highway miles, driven @ 55 MPH in OD, and no AC. Most of you guys won't want to go that slow or drive w/out your AC.

MODs which helped were:

Cold Air Intake
40 series muffler
Electric Fans
Custom 91 Octane Performance Tune
Tonneau Cover
