Brother is looking at an 00 F150 V6, Advice?
Somebody ran a stop sign and totalled his explorer on christmas day, and luckily he had full coverage because they didn't have insurance at all. We're currently fighting state farm because they only want to to give us 4,500 for his 00 Explorer.
Anyways, we've found an 00 F150 with ~100,000 miles for 5,500. It has the 4.2 in it, and appears to be in fairly good shape. Is there anything he should know about these trucks when they get around this mileage and is 5,500 an okay price? Thanks in advance.

The 4.2 is a realiable engine if maintained with in reason. The 97 - 98 4.2 had some hydro-locking issues but you will be fine with an 00'. My 02' 4.2 just went over the 100K mark last month. Only thing I've had to do besides normal maintenance is repalce the plugs and coil pack at 90K. Other then that this has been a very realiable truck.
I'm not sure on the $5,500 price based on your descriptoin of it. Is it a supercab? XLT? etc....

i got my 00 reg cab xl 4.2 auto with 103,000 on it for 5000.it has cruise control, overhead console, and was in pretty good shape. like said above97,98's had the issue so our 00's are fine. 5500 might be a little much i think high blue is like 5000 for one in good shape so you might try to get it for a little bit less

I got my 99' 4.2 for 5k. In any other case I would have talked the guy down to 4500 but it was, and still is, in perfect shape and the guy was so nice so I would have felt bad. In your case I guess in this case your brother needs to decide if it is in good enough shape to be worth that, if not atleast get it down to 5k. Just my 2 cents.

I am not sure about the price. But I can tell you that the 4.2 motor is a good motor that is real easy to work on. I have a 138,xxx miles on my 99 xlt xcab. Now that I am changing some of the old parts it has been easy to work on. Changing parts just for piece of mind not because they are bad. Check on this site there is a bunch of people with more than 100,000 on 4.2. Ben

Yup - I like my simple pushrod engine with plugs right out in the open in the side of the heads, plug wires, and a external coil pack. It's not a fast truck but I didn't buy it to go fast, I bought it to be a TRUCK. I've taken it cross country a few times and it runs all day at 75+ mph. It uses about 1 quart of oil in 7000 miles, it has 90k on it.

Feel like I'm beating a dead horse... But....
5500 sounds high.
100k miles, not bad - IF they took care of it. These aren't toyota's that you can beat the crap out of and they still run forever.
I'd have a well versed and non-biased mechanic check it out first.
I would try and negotiate that price down a bit.
My 2 cents could be worth less to you though.
