Angry Mass air flow question

2000 F150 4.2L auto.

I have a mass air flow problem. I am driving with a known bad sensor (wire is physically Broken). IT is not showing any symptoms of a bad sensor.
I bought a used one from a junk yard. Installed in and motor works like crap and dies after majorly stumbling.
It does not make sense if it runs fine with know bad one.

Any thoughts.

Hi.

Alignment of the planets, maybe?

Anyways - wire that's broken may not be immediately critcal, and the yard sensor may be faulty and/or needs a-cleanin'. Use CRC MAF cleaner only - don't touch the element.

Or , try a KNOWN good sensor. That's 'shootin' 101 lol.

good luck.

Yes, try cleaning it with CRC (I think that's what it's called). Also, if you are still having problems, I have a spare stock MAF sensor from my 5.4L... I don't know if it will work on the 4.2L but if it does, you're welcome to have it cheap (plus shipping). It is off of an 03 5.4L, I have the entire stock air intake, I upgraded to a K&N. I know for a fact that it works.

You can PM me or just email me @ johnnyhardclose@yahoo.com. I have a paypal account but again, try cleaning yours first. No sense in paying for something you don't need.

Good Luck buddy

If it's bad, you should trip a CEL. I'd imagine that you truck would run chitty also, sputtering maybe.

I had one that needed to be cleaned, but it wasn't bad. I knew it needed to be cleaned when I would hit the gas and go WOT and the truck would always sputter and and stop before it would finally kick in. All my dash lights would come on also and then go off.

The symptoms of a bad MAF sensor is poor idling/stalling, excess fuel consumption, severe pinging, and definatly a rough running condition.

Hey MGD, hope you see this. You say to use CRC MAF cleaner only. Is this as opposed to CRC electriclean? Couldn't find the MAF cleaner at the local auto parts store and the other stuff is supposed to be for the same thing. Thanks, hope you reply.

I used CRC Electiclean, it worked great. I don't think they make a special kind for MAFs. You should be good with the standard.

I've used brake parts cleaner for years. Cheap and works fine.

If you unplug the MAF sensor, the computer uses default values in its place. It will run okay, but not at peak efficiency or emissions You will, of course, get a MIL.
