I'm getting P0301, I'm guessing misfire in a specific cylinder?

i have a 2004 f150 4.2 v6 ive had it for a several years now i keep up on it pretty good,but ive been having a problem. i notice it more when the weather is cold outside...when i start the truck its fine but as it warms up a lil the rpm's stuck jumping up and down. the truck acts like it just wants to jump off the ground at times.i took it to auto zone and i got p0174 system to lean on back two...ive cleaned my mass air flow sensor and still no change...i know i still have o2 sensors to change is there a certian one i should start wth or should i just change both of them on bank two? i do alot of driving back and fourth to orlando and cant have any major problems happen thanks for any help

 

That code is not a symptom of a bad O2 sensor. It's REPORTING that you have an uncorrectable lean condition. Check for vacuum leaks. If you DO replace the O2 sensors, the front ones are all you need to deal with - the only function of the rear sensors are to monitor cat efficiency for emissions reporting and will not affect the way it runs at ALL.

 

well thanks for that ill get back to looking for vac leaks..i found one not to long ago but fixed it...ive tried spraying lil sprays of carb cleaner to see if the idol changes didnt find anything but ill continue to look thanks again...

Yes, that's possible, but I would think a bad head gasket would cause some other issues too. You can do a hydrocarbon test on the coolant.

You may need new intake gaskets and isolator bolts.

 

alright well i found a vacum leak same one i fixed a while back it broke again small leak but well have to wait til morn to see if thats it but thanks ill let you know

 

Isnt there a cheaper way to figure out the codes stored onb the trucks computer. i heard you can use a paper clip but i dont know which holes i could plug it into.

 

while we're at it, lets stick a throttle body spacer and tornado fuel saver on the truck as well

 

No paper clip possible with OBD2, that was only for OBD1. You can buy a cheap code reader for 35 bucks.

 

well how do i know which code reader is the correct one for my truck? And is it true that if the truck has not been running for a while (such as five years) that the computer will not give you codes because of it not running?
