Exclamation Gas mileage update

Since replacing my coil a couple of weeks ago,my mileage has gone up almost 3.5 mpg!
Amazing how one part can effect gas mileage that much.

I got the Borg-Warner brand from Pep Boys.Cost was $85 total,I think.Also,this coil has brass inserts,which is a very good thing.

Strange Idle

Congrats BlueOvalFitter;

I have changed my plugs (gapped) and changed the wires and I was amazed how the truck runs, but it's not consistant. When it come up to temp, it will go like stink, but when I come to an idle it seems a tad rough.

The service engine light has been on for some time, and I was told under diag., the O2 sensor on the manifold is the culpret. After the plug change, on the highway my odometer blacked out and the S.E.L.flashes.

Do you think it may be the coil? I was thinking the fuel filter, but I was reading a tread that if you want to change your filter, you have to have special tools....and it can be a pain, is this true?

What made you change it? Just gas mileage, or was there something else?

The fuel filter is extremely easy to do. You need a $5 tool (if that) to do it and the filter. Just make sure when you unhook the filter you leave the lines coming into and out of it pointing up. Don't get right under it to do it because you will spill fuel.

The coil was bad.It arced out and burned two wires at the coil itself.That,and the engine was idling erratically and stumbled.I had installed new wires and plugs but the problem was still there.When I replaced the coil it smoothed out and the mileage jumped back up.

So this was the replacement of an OEM part and not a upgrade.

Theoretically,yes,it is an upgrade,because this coil has brass inserts and the factory coil does not.As you know,brass/copper is a better condutor of electricity.

I should replace it when my OEM dies, right? Is it worth putting one on or not?

We have NAPA in the St.Louis area but no Pep Boys, do you have a link or a part number so I know what to buy, I my do this cause my truck being a 4X4 sure does use the gas.
thanks Blue Oval Fitter
