First vehicle I ever drove was a Mac 10 speed working @ a grain elevator and had to float the gears. Anyways back to the point @ hand I had a tach in last 3 vehicles I drove and never even looked @ the thing you should be able to tell from road feel, engine sound, and speed about what gear you are in and where you need to be.
Do nothing but float the gears but a tach in a gas engines is needed because have you tried to float gears in a pickup truck-you have to be dead on cause the syncros are not there!2 different animals How about the people who just bought their first truck and opted for a stick because of cost. You honestly think that not having a tachometer helped them out?If you think it did you have a pretty narrow mind!
And also not new school,I grandfathered in many many years ago !Teamster and damn proud to be one.
Now when you started floating you should have started in dads pickup truck,I am sure that he would have loved that!

ok so when did we say we needed a tach. im lost

But, i had a 03 mazda 6s and liked it when i could see when i was about to redline. when i got my truck i had to run the gears as far as they would go before redline. now after driving my truck with no tach i am kinda use to it. i just want a tach cause i would like to know the rpms of my truck.

Yeah, same here.

Is it safe to say that no V6 XL's have a tach?

This is what I am saying.Every car,truck I owned or drove 4cyl.,6cyl.,8cyl.,with a manual transmission had a tachometer.From the 60's to the 90's.
And I have a friend who bought the bottom line 2006 GMC 4.3 and it has a tach.I assumed that Ford would have that as standard equipment on their standard shift models.I have been proven wrong, won't be the last time!

nope, friend of mine has an 03 xl sport with a tach. mines an 02 xl sport and didnt come with one. only way to get a tach is buy an aftermarket tach and tach driver to make installation simple or like mentioned earlier, to get a cluster with tach and have it re-programmed for your truck. the latter is more expensive.....

Are those both 5 speed manuals though?

How 'bout...
Is it safe to say no V6 XL manuals have a tach?

maybe i'm not reading your post right, or you typed it wrong. the reason it's easy to slide gears in a big truck is because it dosen't have synchros. pick ups/cars have synchros. i can slide them in my DD 97 neon pos without a tach just as easy as i can in a freightshaker/international/volvo/whateverthe****theystickmeinthatday.....

^^^foodservice delivery driver BTW.

Sorry to disappoint, the last section on a fuller is the syncro case, with the cluster and the forks, diaphrams ect...
As for the neon I ain't got a clue maybe enough slop, all the automobile manual trans I have used were tight and the gate was so close that until you got used to it they made a little nose.heavy steel hauler,O/Opp to many years to think about, the o/opp part means knuckle buster on the really bad days!

Saw a 2006 F-150 XL with 4.2 engine, 5 speed, and a tach on a lot at a dealer in Toledo. Perhaps Ford is now installing a tach on XL's with the stick?

I have a '00 4.2L w/o a tach and tried it this morning and it worked! Thanks for the tip.

actually its very easy, if u read the earlier posts on here u will see all you have to do is get the xlt cluster and put it in ur truck BUT you MUST have the dealer program the PATS for you so just swap out the tach in the dealer parking lot :-) oh also its a good idea to have the mileage set which ford can do...

also.. 03 4.2l v6 reg cab XL sport has tach :-) both in auto and 5spd
