v-6 tach
LOL, you say you drive a semi for a living and been driving nothing but standards since you were knee high to a **** ant. I think you must be one of those new truck drivers that was taught @ "truck driving school" instead if OTR training. Dad is 67 years old been driving since before I was born. First vehicle I ever drove was a Mac 10 speed working @ a grain elevator and had to float the gears. Anyways back to the point @ hand I had a tach in last 3 vehicles I drove and never even looked @ the thing you should be able to tell from road feel, engine sound, and speed about what gear you are in and where you need to be.
I must say ford ƒucked up on that one. A manual with no tach? I know i could drive just fine without one, infact i hardly ever look at mine other then to figure out where the rev limiter was once or twice. But when your car idles funny, you going to tell a mechanic, "Oh, it's idling at about 25mph."
I'd love to be there with a bucket of popcorn and watch the mechanic's face.

if what i was told is true there is a tach in your odometer. all you have to do is press(and hold) the reset thing while you turn the ignition on. then press the little stick thing a few times untill it shows"TACH"! i dont know if this will work on the older(pre-2004 trucks but i was told it would) then when you turn the engine back off it resets itself back to the odometer.

Think that would work on my "non digital" odometer?
Those of us with a 5 speed and no tach, is it because we have XL's and not XLT's? Or do some of you have XLT's also w/ no tach?
Yes, XL's had no tach. Mine doesn't. It's not needed. The power is gone before redline anyway. This truck wasn't meant for performance driving. Yes, I would prefer to have one, but I don't miss it for every day driving. Those of you who are squeezing all the performance out of it will need a tach, but you also may want to save up for a tranny as well. This thing was not meant to be driven fast.
I have had a series of F-150's ranging from a 1998 4.6 w/ a tach (auto / XLT) to the last three all being 4.2 / 5 Speed XL's starting with a 2001 (traded in due to gaining a family), a 2004 Heritage which was traded in on my 4 door extended cab. None of the 42's had/have a tach from the factory. I have done the tach trick with the odometer, and it works. There are a bunch of other measurements that you can check as well, but I have not figured them all out yet. I might one day check them. Basically, just hold down the button when you have the key set to on (not started yet) and after a few (5 or so, I think) seconds, it will perform a lamp test and gauge test. It even tells you this in the digital readout. From there, you can start the truck and it will allow you to cycle through the different measurements. The readout tells you that the measureand as well as the value (ex. tach 2423). When you restart the truck, you will lose this mode and the readout reverts to the odometer.
I am pretty sure this is the proper way to do this. It has been a while since I have done this.
Hope it works!!!

I have a 01 4.2L XL 5 Speed with no Tach. I know how to access the one through the digital display but it's a pain in the butt because it resets the tripmeter everytime you do it. I once asked Ford how much it would be to have one put in my truck and they said around $700 plus service, but because my truck didn't come with a Tach from the factory..they would have to do a special request from Ford to have it put in so there was no guarantees. I thought it was a load of crap..but oh well.

thats cause they wasnt to charge you out the *** for a new guage cluster.
you can probly pick one up and have it installed around $300 or so. but its not that easy i forget what has to be done, but you cannot just have it installed.

I have an 02 Sport XL, and its came with no tach. It never bothered me till I got a good($15) deal on a Sunpro Tach II. Installation was simple, tapped into the headlioght switch for light, radio for power, pin #48 for tach signal, and a ground. Using a green gelcap, now I get the same glow as the dash
