Ticking and warmup

Hey I'm posting this for someone else who is having this problem

"My 2001 F150 has a noticeable "ticking" after it warms up. It has the 4.2 6cyl and about 57K miles. The cooling fan also runs intermittently, although it doesn't overheat, just the fan starts and stops. Any help is appreciated, because the dealer has not been much help."

Thanks!

I have the same ticking sound, and the fan does the same, I can't say its normal, but at least he's not alone!

Ive been told the ticking noise when the motor is off is the sound of the aluminum cooling, especially the oil pan. Not sure about idling or running----I would think maybe sticking lifter?

I had the same problem...sort of. My 99 4.2 always did the ticking or "diesel" sound when cold. Not sure what it was, but when I had the motor apart, I did replace the rings and lifters.....which is what I thought it was, Like a lifter wasnt getting oil or was bleeding off till it expanded or something. Hope that helps....

Angry Ticking

I have a ticking in my 01 4.2l. Took it to the dealer and they said nothing wrong-normal. It seems to be getting louder. The noise is coming from the lower end of the engine.

I also have a 2001 with 85K miles and it has been ticking since 15K miles. I'm pretty sure mine is an exhaust leak around one of the manifolds. I removed the exhaust manifold bolts, when it was new, one at a time, to put anti-sieze on the threads. I was thinking it would make getting the manifolds easier to get off in the future. Well, it looks like this is the future and I need to replace the manifold gaskets (maybe even a warped manifold). The truck runs great and the ticking noise doesn't bother me, so maybe I'll just leave it be for a while longer.

Get rid of the Fram oil filter and put a Motorcraft on it?

My 2008 ticks lightly for the first few minutes when it's cold. Dealer has always said it's normal. Even had the lifters replaced once and it still did it. 36k and the truck runs fine. I'm not worried about it.
