i left my truck at home cause it was having problems and brought my dads 02 with a v-6 back to school with me, 5 hour trip from Philadelphia PA to Morgantown WV. Granted i was absolutely hating how much it shifted on the hills and my lack of acceleration, but it did end up getting around 19.4 mpg with it being incredibly(insanely) windy. So if you need cheap gas this is the way to go.

Hmmm. I noticed similar MPG between the 6 and the 8. The 6 has to work alot harder/shifts alot more than the V8. That eats up gas. If you had a 2wd manual 6, you may get better gas. For the price, the v8 isnt that much of a premium, plus not very many people want a full size v6 truck in the resale market.

A V6 in the 97-03 models does serve a very good purpose so long as it's not a 4x4 V6.......I really don't know if THAT would serve a purpose other than to suck down gas. If you're not hauling massive amounts of stuff, go ranching everyday, and don't drive your truck like it's stolen trying to beat everyone off of every stoplight (and being able to do it most of the time), then you really don't have a need for the 5.4 Triton other than to say "I have the 5.4 Triton V8 and I will get better resale than you." Before I got the lead foot syndrome, I was getting 21-22 mpg highway with my V6. Now that I added an Airaid, I do admit that my foot is heavier, so my mileage has suffered. All in all, even with my Airaid, my mileage is STILL a LOT better than people I know with the 4.6 and 5.4 V8's (97-03 models).
I never thought I'd say it but....when I look to replace my current baby with a newer model, I'm not only going to be looking for an 02 or 03 with less than 25,000 miles on it, I'll probably be looking for a V6.

Is that why Ford stop selling the V-6 with 4X4?

I've got a '01 4.2 4x4 5-speed that works just great. It hauls any rated load with no problem. It will pull any trailer up to 3,000 pounds with no problem. It consistently gets 19 mpg; tank after tank; back to back; no "bad fill" mileage claim. You only need a V-8 if you REGULARLY pull trailers over 3,000 pounds IMO. It is a truck after all.

If anyone has it post it up. The difference between a 4.2 and a 4.6 both @ 3100 RPM was a whopping 8 HP. Considering that quite a few of these guys are slapping turbos and superchargers it is not a lonely motor. And the exhaust sounds better. So in the end it's just a personal preference. The exhaust really sucks but other than that. It's a great little truck that does it's job.
