You do need a Ford CMP synchronizer tool to install the CMP or the timing will be out of synch with fuel delivery. All sorts of drivability problems can arise if the CMP is not installed correctly.

Camshaft Position Sensor . F58Z12A112AA . $54.44
Labor 1.2 Hours

How did you figure out this was causing a problem?

Replaced everything else on the front of the motor. Mechanic who works on our company vehicles found it with a stethascope.
I have already put new alt. waterpump, idler pulleys. tensioner pulley assembley, and new belt. so I took it to our company mechanic and after about an hour of looking he found it with his stethascope.

what all do I need to replace? what causes it to squeak? I haven't taken it apart yet. It is in a tight spot. EGR and heater hoses are in the way.

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

I honestly didn't think you meant that literally

Don't replace the CMP. I really doubt it's even physically capable of squeaking. Get a Goodyear Gatorback Belt. It designed to eliminate these chirps you're hearing. It's about $30.00 and any NAPA or Autozone should have one for you. If you have a 1997 4.2L w/AC, the P/N is: 4061030

Howdy bcertain,

I dont think its the cps. Sounds more like a belt. Plus you dont need the little tool from Ford. Go to the dollar store and buy an anlge finder for a dollar (gee, at the dollar store?). Set it at 54` based on the centerline of the crank being 0` (pointing toward radiator). Its that simple.

Save the money for &

Paul

Thumbs up you've got it right

its definetly the syncronizer for the cps, done it twice. take the serpentine belt off and start vehicle (only for a short time) still have the noise its the syncro.

Can someone describe in more detail what this part actually does, what causes the synchronizer to wear out, and what is actually involved to remove it?

My truck has this exact problem and would like to know more about what is involved

Thanks!!

The cam position sensor and synchronizer start the timing for fuel delivery I think. The sensor is basically a magnet. The synchronizer is a half circle shape that passes by the magnet as the engine rotates it (similar to a distributor rotor). I had to replace the sensor and synchro since the magnet fell out of the sensor and took out the half circle.

Yup,seems to be my issue,Had the cam position sensor code, pulled it of fto replace it and whammo....looks like it was in a blender.Cant believe it was still running.Camera broke so i cant take pics but it looks like a nightmare.Guess ima have to take it to a mech now.

I post this because before at certain times when i would crank it i would get a noise that i thought was belts. After replacing the belt i still would get it now and again.I truly believe that the squeal was that thing grinding around in there.
