gas mileage

I put half a tank in on sunday night, i drive to work and back on monday, and to the battery place to get a new battery for my truck. I drove 30 miles on monday, and i was already down to a quarter tank, and explanations? this was also going easy on the pedal.

It happens. Short trips kill mileage on these trucks. I have a ScanGauge II. I can see 29 MPG on the gauge when coasting along in the mid to low 50's (MPH). On road trips, I've gotten 26 MPG easily. That's great when you have 27 gallons of gas and a lot of miles to cover - I can drive all day without refueling! But when I just run to the 7Eleven & back, the trip average says 5.6 MPG. So you figure it out: somewhere in between is the median MPG for the tank. When we actually fill it up with mixed use driving, the average user sees about 15.

Have you considered that someone siphoned off some of your gas?

no, i live in a gated neighborhood, nobody around would do that, its never been this bad before, but it has been bad. I took it to a shop and they said it doesnt need a tune up because its low miles. they said it could be fuel fitler, air filter, or a leak.

First of all, let's rule out the leak. You would know that there was one. You would have smelled the gasoline, and that lit Marlboro dangling between your lips would have sparked it.

Aren't you still under your 5 year warranty? Take it back to the dealership. See if it is something that you can get fixed for free as a warranty service.

It could just be deferred maintenance.

Fuel filter is one of those things that people don't remember to do. But there are a lot of things that people forget to do. Check your service schedule to see what else you've forgotten to have done. Then work your way up from there. You don't have a "Check Engine Light" yet, so that is good.

Now let's talk about the air filter. Go look at it. Does it look like this:

'nuff said!

Again: could one of your fellow gaited community neighbors be laid off from work, seen his monthly payment go up due to an adjustable rate mortgage, fall into arrears with his child support, develop a coke habit to cope with the stress of investment losses in this rough economy......and is now resorting to siphoning your gas?

You are not suppose to throw away your K&N and replace it with a new one. You are suppose to clean and oil it every 30,000 miles, or as needed.

Before you do anything, go fill it up twice in a row and calculate your mileage properly.

I usually average 18 mpg on the highway but it drops to 15 on certain winter blends.

And its usually best to find a new gas station and stick to one place. Older tanks may have more junk and crud in them than the new ones, depending on how well the suppliers maintain there trucks.

EDIT: Pics of truck or face the consequences.

Start tracking your mileage by using www.fueleconomy.gov

Then report back with your results.

If you're going solely by the gauge...stop it. It moves quickly in certain areas.

If you were getting ~5 miles to the gal, it should be obvious.

Dont our trucks have an anti-siphoning vent in the filler neck?

did you drive the truck til it needed more fuel? ur floater in the gas tank might be screwed up. also it might have been a bad tank. ive had that happen before. i filled up to the top, drove home(which was 10 mi) and the next morning it was down to half a tank. foam likes to screw stuff up like that.
