Thumbs down THE H.P FREAK FINALLY BROKE SOMETHING!

HI!... Well guys after almost 2-1/2 years, I finally broke something on my truck! Yesterday after noon I was on my local expressway, when I went to go pass someone. My truck shifted into overdrive at full throttle and just revved to the rev limiter. Yes, I nuked my overdrive! 1ST to 3RD still works fine but my overdrive band is history! I brought my truck to my "RACE" tranny builder and he confirmed what I feared. Overdrive was totally obliterated! CAUSE? Too much torque being produced from my engine at full throttle when going into overdrive. The STOCK overdrive band just simply was unable to have sufficient "CLAMPING FORCE" to hold the drum. From over time it wore at the overdrive band little by little until it finally failed. So now for $2300.00(CAN) I'm going to have my tranny guy build me a 4R70-W "RACE" tranny for my truck. Should be good for 500H.P and that includes a 2000 - 2200RPM stall converter. It will also have one MAJOR A$$ hard shift kit in it.

P.S : Just a warning to all you BAUMANN ENGINEERING kit installers out there. When installing your kits, WHATEVER YOU DO! DO THE OVERDRIVE MOD IN THE INSTRUCTIONS, if you are making more than 400FT/LBS of torque! This is the mod that increases the line preasure for the overdrive band. If you don't do this like I did you WILL eventually have a overdrive band failure! I was told by several tranny techs at my tranny builder's shop that this is one of the main WEAKEST points in the 4R70-W transmissions. I hope I caught some of you in time before you installed your kits.

Awww, crappy.

Look at the bright side... at least it wasn't a rod or bearing in the engine that went! That would be much much worse.

HI!... Well guys "THE FREAK" is still OVERDRIVELESS!lol! I talked to my tranny builder, and my truck is going in next TUESDAY to have the tranny rebuilt. I origanaly was going to get GARY SR. to build me another 4R70-W and then just drop my truck off and in one day it would be done. Gary could'nt find another 4R70-W out of a F-150 that was in decent condition. Plus the one he did find, the guy at the salvage yard wanted $700(CAN) for just the core! NOT! So we decided to just RACE prep the origanal tranny in my truck. It will most likely be done on THURSDAY. We decided on a 2000RPM stall converter with double brazed fins, steel stator, and a custom machined TORINGTON bearing instead of the cheap PLASTIC bushing that FORD uses. He's upgraded all the electronics in the tranny to the most current stuff. The rest is all being built out of BORG&WARNER "RACE" (HEAVY DUTY) clutches, seals, and bands. He's going to JACK up the OVERDRIVE band line preasure and a lot more tricks that I can't mention here. He showed me a stock 4R70-W torque converter split apart. WOW! I can't beleive that these converters don't blow up! There is SO many junk parts in there it is'nt even funny! I'll let you guys know how the tranny works out when I get it back next week.

I ordered a custom programming from Mike
for Extra firm shifting, from what I understand this increases line pressure int he tranny, Would there be something I should
do before installing my chip again?

No Morely, this doesn't affect you, you aren't installing a Bauman Shift kit. There is nothing more you need to do, just install the Superchip when it arrives.

The issue that Neal is talking about is simply telling people who install the Bauman shift kit to go ahead and do the part of the kit that increases fluid volume flow to the overdrive band, if you'll read his post carefully. I have also spoken with Neal over the phone about this at length.

Neal's problem came from many episodes, at much higher torque numbers than you have, of doing full-throttle upshifts into 4th gear at redline rpms & very high speeds by popping the Overdrive back on at redline and under WOT (wide-open throttle). The problem he's experienced with his overdrive band failing stemmed from the combination of how the vehicle was operated, it's power output levels, and him not doing the section of the shift kit mods that would have increased flow to the overdrive band to help it grip just as he mentioned. He's just trying to let everyone know not to make that same mistake when installing the Bauman shift kit.

This does not affect you or your custom program for firmer shifting.

Hi Neal, sorry to hear about your tranny. I could not find another 4R70W case so I sent my tranny to Art Carr for a performance rebuild. I have a 2400 stall converter with racing clutch packs and a one piece input shaft amoung other things. Art Carr says it is good to 700 HP, not that I believe it. Anyway, your tranny was going to be your weakest link after your blower install and the bright side is now it won't! My tranny was about $2000 and the converter about $725 US

HI!... Well guys, I'm still TRUCKLESS! My truck was supposed to be done today but as usual EVERTHING has gone wrong this week. 1ST - I dropped my truck off at WORLWIDE TRANSMISSIONS on MONDAY night so they could start it first thing TUESDAY. Well TUESDAY morning the TRANNY TECH went home sick, so no one worked on my truck. 2ND - WEDNESDAY the TRANNY TECH was back but was having a HELL of a time getting my tranny out of my truck, as of closing time he still did'nt have it out! MAN I can get it out in 3 hours! 3RD - Today the tranny was out and almost totally rebuilt but would not be ready as planned for me to pick up THURSDAY night! 4TH - When I called tonight to see when I could pick it up tomorrow, they told me that it might not be ready now till MONDAY morning!AGGGGHHHH!!! It seems when my dealer replaced my tailstock about 2 months ago that they re-installed the old WORN OUT slip yoke! Well the damaged slip yoke wore out the slip yoke bushing in the nes tailstock by 85%!!!!!!!!!!! IDIOTS! So now GARY SR. at WORLDWIDE is having very hard time finding me a new SLIP YOKE. No one around here has one. DAM! I CAN'T WIN!

HI!... Well guys I just got off the phone with GARY SR. at WORLDWIDE and it looks like I won't have my truck back now till TUESDAY! The new "RACE" tranny is done and installed but still no slip yoke. GARY finally found a company that had a brand new one but it is in OHIO and won't be able to get here till MONDAY afternoon. DAM! All I can say is that my dealer is definatly going to hear about this!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like the dealer should owe you some $$$. Just think what would have happened if you hadn't found out before the other 15% was gone!!

I would go to my dealer & tell him to order the tailhousing EMERGEMCY ORDER-UNIT DOWN direct from Ford(I do it every day). It should arive the next day on Fedex. That is how it works in the states--the shipping should be 13% of the cost of the part--like I said thats how it works in the US.

HI!... SUMMITMAN : It's not the tailhousing that I'm waiting for. My new race tranny is built and has been in my truck for almost a week. They are waiting on a SLIP YOKE. FORD's does,nt have any so the tranny shop had to order one fron a U.S ford dealer in OHIO. I was supposed to pick up my truck today, but UPS has now lost the slip yoke and can't seem to track it or find it!MORONS!

HI!... Well my truck was'nt ready today either!!!! Well UPS found the slip yoke and got it to DETROIT. Now they lost it AGAIN. No one nows where it is now. Hopefully it will come in tomorrow. I WANT MY TRUCK!!!!!!!!!
