Question B&M transmission pan and temp sender.

I've ordered a Baumann Engineering shift kit, and figure that I might as well install an upgraded transmission pan and transmission temperature gauge. I'm considering the B&M (BMM-40287) and was wondering if anyone has installed this pan on a 4R70W? Is the pan thick enough (cast aluminum) to drill and tap for a temperature sender? Any other thoughts on the product such as fit and general quality?

Thanks.

Cool

HI!... GAH : I was looking at the same B&M deep pan. I think the pan is a good idea. If I were you I would get a AUTOMETER "TEMPURATURE MANIFOLD" part # ATM-2286 FOR 3/8 TUBING. The go with a "MECHANICAL" ATOMETER tranny temp guage only. Electric tranny temp guages are NOT accurate. The temp probe just simply screws into the temp manifold. The temp manifold splices into your out going tranny line. This is the set-up that I used and am very happy with it. I hope this helps you out a bit.

Neal...: Could you explain how you installed the trans temp guage. Which Autometer guage did you buy along with the Temp Manifold? What parts did you need? Where did you install the temp manifold? Did you have to cut the line? Thanks, Dennis

Thanks Neal.
An electrical temp sender works by relating a change in temperature to a change in resistance right? But how does the mechanical temp sender work? Do you have to run the 3/8" tubing (full of ATF) into the cab and plug it directly into the gauge? I would think that this would result in a lower temperature reading as well. I'll look into the parts that you've recommended though. If I copy your setup, I won't have to drill and tap the B&M pan. More good news.

Here's what Neal is referring to.

Neal,
Does the fitting shown (ATM-2286) require any adapters other than what's shown, or is it as simple as disconnecting the transmission "out" line and installing the fitting in series? I have some other questions that I'll be posting under a new topic regarding other Autometer gauges.

Neal,
I ordered the B&M trans pan (BMM-40287) this morning along with a bunch of Autometer parts including the ATM-2286 manifold. I found an explanation on Autometer's web site of how their mechanical temp gauges work. The tube running from the sensor to the gauge is full of ether gas, which expands with an increase in temperature, thereby moving the gauge needle. You probably knew that already though. I can't wait to install the shift kit, pan and gauges. I may have some more questions for you so please hang around. I did a search on Baumann's shift kit, and you suggested starting on level 4 ... so 4 it is.

HI!... DJBOGUE : I bought a AUTOMETER 2-5/8 "PHANTOM SERIES" tranny temp guage. It comes with it's own length of "CAPILLARY" tubing. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO "KINK" this tubing or the guage wil not work. You need a tube cutter (brake line cutter). I installed my "TRANNY TEMP MANIFOLD" directly underneith the rad crossmember towards the driver's side. Make sure you splice the manifold into the line coming from the tranny before it goes into the tranny cooler in the rad. This way you will get a more accurate reading of tranny fluid temp. In order to mount the tranny temp guage probe to the tranny temp manifold you have to buy a "EXTENSION ADAPTER" from AUTOMETER. PART # is ATM-2373 for the 3/8 one and PART # ATM-2374 for the 1/2 one. I would advise you buy this "EXTENSION ADAPTER" after you buy your guage. AUTOMETER uses both these size probes on many of their guages, so it would be best to see which one you get with your tranny guage first. I mounted my tranny temp guage in a AUTOMETER guage pod that mounts to the driver's "A" pillar. You must dril a hole for the sensor to go through and 4 small ones to mount the guage pod. The pod can be painted to match the interior of your truck. Hope this helps you out. ,

HI!... GAH : You simply cut the out going tranny tubing with a small tube cutter and splice in the tranny temp manifold. The fittings that come with the manifold are a compression fitting, so you simply slide the tubing into them and tighten up the nuts. I would advise you to splice the manifold in as close to the driver's side near the rad as you can. The capillary tubing that comes with the guage is only SO long and you cannot shorten or lengthen it. So make sure you stretch it all out and route it past everything before you start cutting the tranny tubing. I hope this helps you out.

Neal,
Thanks for the advice. I guess it's easy enough to figure out which one is the outgoing transmission cooler line. I remember someone saying that you can run the engine and feel both lines. The first one to get hot is the outgoing line. There's probably an easier way. I plan on getting everything figured out before I start anything. I don't want to cut a line to find that I need a different fitting.

My B&M pan is on its way. I hope it looks like this.

This pan is on a 4R100 but it should look very similar on a 4R70-W. My thanks go to Roger L. Woebbecke from ford-diesel.com for the picture. The black spot is for additional temperature readings using a remote thermometer.
