4r70w

There were a few of you out there that wanted more info on the 4R70W , and weather they should rebuild your tranny yourself .
I am going to give it try . Here is a diagram I found .

SVT,

I think the only other thing you'll need is a BFH (Big Friggin' Hammer) and possibly a screw driver or maybe a crow bar, that aught to do it

Good luck and keep us posted on your success or misfortune, whichever it turns out to be.

Don't follow that diagram too closely. It's for an AOD and AODE. The 4R70W has a few differences. For one, there is no governor in a 4R70W.

ha ha...wouldn't it be funny if you put the tranny back together, put it in the truck and you come to find out that one of the small pieces rolled under the work bench!

...not really funny I know. I'd say screw it and have one of the pros do it-

Sounds like a heck of project to take on yourself, it's a lot more technical that just putting everything in according to the diagram!!

Yes this is not to be followed per say , just an example of whats instore . There is a manual for the thannies at www.netgearhead.com , not bad prices on the rebuild units.

If I could find , or if there is such a thing as a good or honest transmission shop , I would be happy to let a pro do it .
But on the other hand , it took the last shop 5 tries on my Explorer . Transmission shops know they have you bent over a barrel and you really have no chioce but to pay the $1500 they demand , for crap work to to blow out again a month out of warranty . There are a few good manuals on the 4R70W , really how hard can it be . have you seen the monkeys that work in a tranny shop . The combined IQ of them might equal a 3rd grader .
Not so say everyone the transmission business is a scammer , I just have not seen otherwise . $ 1500.00 for a rebuild , hell the parts only cost $ 100.00 with steels , and thats retail ! I bet 60-70 for them . Sure there is labor to remove and install the tranny .
I pulled mine out a hour and a half , not using a lift or any one else to help . So lets say 3 hours to remove and reinstall , 3 hours to rebuild , hour for lunch, and a hour to wash your hands , thats 8 hours . Basically $ 175.00 , the mechanic might make $ 25-30 hour , do the shops really need $ 150 hour ?
No ,
Just my $ 0.02 cents worth .

3 hours to rebuild
If it were me doing this job, I would plan on more like 16 hours to rebuild it. Only because I know that I would double and triple check everything. Especially if it were going back into my truck. That's just me though.
