Hi FT
Whats your opinion of these machines that are being used to flush/fill the a/t?
Apparently the filter...some call it a "screen" still requires being replaced at certain mileage intervals? Was told by a Ford svc. dept that they didnt change that filter when useing the machine.
No mention of it needing replacement. Sounds kinda odd to me?
Whats gives. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks OT

If I was taking the pan off from any reason, I'd change the filter, but I wouldn't take the pan off just to change the fileter before 100K miles, it's not a screen anymore, a real filter, and unless the transmission is damaged in some way you really don't need to change it.
The flush and fill machines are okay, on boxes built after 8-11-2001 they're the only way to get it all out, the drain plug on the converter was eliminated after that date. Don't let nayone tell you the machine "back flushes", fluid only goes thru the tranny one direction, but they do ussually back flush the line going to the cooler if they disconnect them, the machine doesn't do that, you use a plain old air blow gun, and 15psi of pressure.

Sorry for the possibly novice question here, but I have an '02 4R70W tranny - after the date you listed. Without the drain plug in the converter, what is the proper method a garage mechanic (someone who doesn't have one of these pumps) should use to get all of the tranny fluid out when changing it?
TIA,
Steve

Here is an easy way to do it. It was written for a 4R100, but it will work for a 4R70W, except that you need MERCON V for a 4R70W.

Thanks for the link to that aricle, however before I would even consider doing anything like that I've got a few questions that I would need answered.
1) Is your procedure suppose to be done with the rear wheels on the ground - such that when shifting through gears you're foot is on the brake the whole time? Or are the rear wheels suppose to be jacked up off the ground?
2) I can't say that I've ever seen tranny fluid (except for the spots my old car use to leave on the driveway). So how obvious is it when you have air in the clear hose, beacuse the last thing in this world that I need to do is ruin my transmission by running it dry? I'm asking this, because I'm picturing motor oil (the only fluid I'm use to seeing) flowing through a clear hose, and I would have to say that I think it would tough to tell when there is air and not oil.
TIA,
Steve

You don't need to raise the wheels. They do not turn during this procedure.
I think it is very obvious when you see large air bubbles. You'll see a few small ones as the fluid starts to flow, then solid flow, then large bubbles. That's when you shut it off.

Hi FT
Thanks for reply. I have a better understanding. Cant back flush a/t..ok. Correct name is "filter"
Reply on other thread etc. Same with 2 Ford svc. dept. i talked to. They dont change a/t filter for normal/scheduled fluid change. They say it dosent have to be changed and there is no change schedule.
They both use the flush/fill machine. But opinions were different. Private shop same...with their opinions.
Do get confusing.
MarkK. tks. for link.
Would it be correct to say if the fluid were changed with the flush/fill machine (no pan drop) the TQ still gets new fluid even thou the drain plug is not removed?
Thanks again...Good luck...OT.

Old Timer,
The TQ fluid does get changed. The fluid is being pulled in from the trans cooler return line with your pump inside the tranny. It circulates the fluid throughout the tranny including the TQ, and dumps the old out the send line to your cooler.

Hi John
Tks. Thats what i thought, just wanted to be sure.
Last fluid chg. on my tranny got filter change.
I think from what ive learned here...ill go with just the machine flush fill. Then perhaps later on...new filter. Of course that depends on my keeping this truck. Still thinking about a chg.

Old Timer,
I know where you're coming from. I think the flush is the way to go. It gets every bit of the old fluid out. I wondered about the filter too. From my other post below.
From everything I've read I should be ok, as the original was changed at 35k. I think the next change at 90k I'll have the dealer do it. They also have the flush machine now. They said they will drain, put on a new filter and then flush.
I guess I'm just being ****, but I consider my truck a valuable investment. I hope to have it for many more years to come. With a young daughter I'm sure I've got expenses coming up I can't even fathom.
Take care,
John

Factory tech makes the best shift kits for the 4r100. Its probably the best lightning valve body out there. Firms shifts and increases tranny life. Goto Lightning boards and look under the supporting vendors. on www.nloc.net
