Anyone seen this intermittent shifting problem?

Hey Guys,

I posted about this awhile back, the problems still not resolved.

When taking off from a dead stop, my tranny will intermittently shift from drive low directly to overdive within a matter of seconds, causing the truck to bog. Also, the tranny will not upshift on it's own, it has to be done manually. Additionally, the tranny will sometime hunt for a gear and the torque convertor will lock and unlock at random.

This problem started with about 2k on the odometer. The truck was at the dealer twice totaling over 23 day out of service. The dealer replaced the PCM, rear tail shaft sensor and a bad wire in the wiring harness...problem is still there. This problem is very intermittent, sometime it won't happen for days and othertimes all day long.

I sent a certified letter to ford asking to have the truck replaced...still waiting for that reply.

Anyway, just curious if anyone has seen or heard about this problem-

Bob

my only comment is...how do you shift an automatic manually that won't shift on it's own...?

Unhappy Uh? grab the lever

Troy,

The tranny won't shift electronicly, but will shift manually via the shift selector on the column L1, L2, D.

so, you are telling us that if you leave your truck in drive (D), it won't up or downshift on its own. but if you put it in 1, and then manually go up through the gear selections it will shift to the next gear and so forth? very odd to say the least...and extremely odd that they can't find out what's wrong with it!!

How long have you had the truck? If it's a new as it sounds then Fords reply would be interesting to say the least! Although knowing Ford it will probably be a big fat NO take it in for service.

TroyK,

Yes, that's exactly what I mean-

Speedy46,

New Jersey lemon laws state that a vehicle in for the same unsuccessful repair 3 or more times is considered a lemon (or) a vehicle in for repair and out of service for more than 20 cumulative calender day is also considered a lemon.

If ford answers "NO" to my request...Court it is. If they are found be at fault in court they will pay my attorney fees and double (x2) refund costs to me.

It would be in Ford's best interest to swap out my truck while they have the chance, which is only 3 months old and has about 2,500 miles on it.

The lemon law process really works, it also scares the **** out of car manufacters. I had a 1998 Dodge Ram lemon back in '98 with a steering colunm problem they couldn't fix...got a new truck and an extra $4,000 in shutup money, and that's without even going to court-

Ringmaster,

Yep, sounds like my problem, but not as sever as mine.

how many miles on it? If you are within your states lemon law milage and time limit, you can send a certified letter (requiring a signiture) to you local Ford regional manager demanding it be repaired within 10 days or your going to file a lemon law claim. Watch how fast it gets fixed- Don't let the dealer bullsh*t you...that's not normal operation!

Check your local lemon laws- and save your receipts-

"Ford- Please don't make me go back to Dodge or the butt ugly chevy!"

...ha ha

I started having a problem with mine the last few days it all started after I towed a trailer for the first time last weekend or a couple days after I towed the trailer. So I don't know if that has something to do with it or not the truck has just over 63,000 miles on with origanal fluid and filter in tranny. On hard take offs it wont shift out of first unless I let off it a little and will shift kind of hard then will shift the other geares about normal but on easy take offs its fine so far. Never had this before I towed that trailer so do you think I did any kind of damage to the tranny it did not hunt for gears that much when I towed that trailer only a couple times on a couple hills and I just slowed down on them to keep it from reving too much to keep it at the speed I set on cruise. I don't know if just changing the fluid will solve the problem or not all I can say is this 4r70w tranny sucks since I am now starting to have trouble out of mine.

doing a complete fluid change will prolly fix your problems...63k is a little long on the tooth wouldn't you say?? lastly, how can you say a tranny sucks if you don't even pull regular maintenance on it...?

Sorry to hear about your tranny trobles-

I may be meeting with the Ford rep this friday...I have a feeling this is going to turn into a friggin circus though. They're probably going to want to really dig into my truck to find the problem...that means more scratches on it! they already scratched the **** out of it last time!.

I refuse to be the R & D lab rat for Ford. I'm paying my hard earned money for this crap...heck the trucks already been to the dealership twice totaling 23 days, nearly one months payment down the tubes.

Sorry, just venting!

I will see if a fluid change will solve the problem as far as saying the tranny sucks I can as it was fine until the few days after i towed a trailer the first time as that is when I started to have a problem with it. Because after one time towing and the tranny started to act up that shouldn't happen.

TroyK,

your right, 60k, well overdue on the fluid/filter change, but after reading about all the tranny problem on this board I may have to agree with the guy.

be careful what you believe...especially in forums. in quality and durability studies/surveys...the 4r70w is no worse and perhaps also no better than competing trannies from other manufacturers...personally i've never had a problem with a 4r70w equipped truck. and i can't think of any relatives or friends who have either...and there are a ton o ford trucks in my family.

Well I never had a problem out of mine til the last few days and it all started after I towed a trailer for the first time one time tow job and the tranny starts having problems like I said before that shouldn't happen no matter how often the fluid is changed out.
