Now only 4r70w

I have noticed that ford now only offers the 4r70w trans in the F150's and the expeditions. The good trans is only on the heavier trucks. Obvious cost cutting move. Anyone know if Ford has improved this piece of crap for 03? What a shame.

Question

Dumb question.... My new ('02) owners manual mentions the 4r100 auto trans. Which trans came in my f150?

i think you can still get the 4r100 in the 7700 gvwr f150 supercab or regular cab. and of course any truck that has the blown 5.4l engine (ie...lightning, harley s-crew).

look at the sticker on your door jamb. if the trans code is U, you have the 4r70w. if it's E, then you have the 4r100...

like i mentioned in the previous post...only f150s with the heavy payload option (7700 gvwr) can be had with the 4r100...

California emissions did and may still require the 4R100 if you have a 5.4L or larger engine.

i think this 4r100 california thing is a myth. how could a transmission possibly effect emissions??? somebody clue me in...

i'm pretty sure that at one time the 5.4l equipped trucks only came with the 4r100...or it was at least an option on all 5.4l trucks whether or not they were considered heavy duty.

All California Screws came with the 4r70w . It takes less torque to turn them . That is what helped them get their LEV status . Some may have slipped thru .

All the truck I've seen out here with the 4.6 have the 4r-70w tranny. Not sure about the 54.'s though.

It's confirmed.... Code 'U', aka 4R70W, is the trans I've got. (2002 5.4, not 7700)

funny, I went and looked at my 4x2 5.4L 99 expi and it had the transmision code "E". It doesn't have any kind of payload package. It still shudders and clunks though

Now I'm wondering what my wife's 02 screw has with the 6600# payload group with the 5.4.

Have the Holley S/C on my 00 HD and the U on the id. Am having head work done toward end of month and am concerned about the transmission holding up. Ask the pace where the head work is being done, but says he only knows of a Chevy and not a Ford place to beef up the tran. Anyone know of a place in Bay area that does this type of work?
