Question Where can I get a speedometer gear?

I want to correct my speedometer by changing the small gear in the trans, but Ford can't get me the correct one. I'm running 4.56 gears and 35" tires and an E4OD trans. I figured a gear for a truck with 4.10's and stock tires should get me close, but Ford says they don't make one for the E4OD and 4.10 or 3.73 gears. The only thing they listed was for a C-6 trans. Does anyone know where I can get a gear? My factory ratio was 3.08.

what year is your truck? I think you had a 92-96 model. In which case is a electric version. Is it a 4x2 or a 4x4? I think the sensor for speed is on the tranny for 4x2's and transfer case on 4x4's. I am not absolutely sure on this one.

Sorry, my truck is a '92 Flareside 4x4 with the 5.8 liter engine. It has the OD cancel switch on the shifter. From what I've read, it must be an E4OD. Now that I think about it, the sensor or cable (whichever it is) should be on the tailshaft of the transfer case, not the transmision. So if thats the case, I could use a gear from a c-6 4x4 4.10 equipped truck, if they use the same transfer case. Hmmm. I'm gonna go crawl under my truck and investigate.

Question

OK, now I'm baffled. I crawled under the truck and couldn't find anything. No speedometer cable, no pulse generator, nothing. Just the 4x4 indicator switch on the txfer case, the PNRD selector switch on the trans, and the electronic trans control wires. Nothing that looked like it could be removable with an interchangable gear on the inside. Does the E4OD use an internal pulse generator, meaning the trans must be torn appart to change the gear? Has anyone run into this before? BTW the t-case is a Borg Warner.

Basically your setup (4x4) is the same as my 89 F-150 4x4. Have you checked the
www.ford-trucks.com

They can give you more instruction than I can...

p.s.-Yep your tranny is the E40d.

Wink

Yep, I posted there also. Sounds like the speedometer runs off the ABS sensor on the rear axle.
Thanks

p.s. I thought I'd seen your name over there Pastmaster.

Have you tried a good speedometor shop. We have one here in Tucson that took care of my friends F-250 and it is dead on now.
