Question Mobil 1 ATF & 4R70

I know the 4R70 requires Mercon V but I would like to go to a synthetic fluid. I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil so I guess it would stand to reason I'd like to go with Mobile 1 synthetic ATF but I do not know if is compatable with the Mercon V requirement.

Anyone using it in their trannys?

Mobil 1 ATF is not MERCON V rated. There are full synthetic fluids available that have a MERCON V rating.

I think transmissions are too expensive to use a fluid that is not recommended by the manufacturer.

i agree, dont use it unless it is mercon V rated.

i'm not sure of the difference between the two ratings, but i know its alot more of a difference than between 5w30 and 10w30 for example.

you could damage your tranny.

Not all 4R70Ws call for Mercon V. Check your tranny dipstick and owners manual to be positive.

Mine calls for plain old Mercon and I did use the Mobil 1 ATF but like Mark says, dont use it if specs call for MerconV.

Good luck.

Le pew is dead right. Some do call just for Mercon (mine does), you have to check the actual dipstick to see what's listed on there. It seems it was just the early models as I think 97 was the first year they started to use Mercon V.
You can use a Mercon V type fluid in a Mercon type tranny but the opposite does not hold true. If you wanted to be safe just buy soemthing with the Mercon V rating and change all the fluid.
Also most dealers jsut have mercon or dextron and have an additive package they can add to bring regular Mercon to Mercon V standards and also add TC shudder fix.

I was under the impression that Mercron V is just synthetic fluid already. That would explain the requirements and backwards compatibility of Mercron v.

You should use Mercon V in all 4R70W's period.

I called Mobil - re using M 1 atf in the tranny.

They said "No - Mob. 1 is NOT recomended for Ford tranneys that require Mercon 5"

RATS - now I have to look for something else. Guess I have to go with Amsoil.

Why don't you just use Mobil 1? I use it in all my 4R70W cars/truck and power steering. I get it at Walmart for $2.XX a quart.

Oh well. I just swapped out my 35,000 mile Mobil 1 fluid for another batch a month or so ago. I do a lot of offroading and have a shift kit with no issues. Maybe in another 30,000 miles I will switch. 71,000 miles and going strong.
