Has anyone looked at their rear diff cover? I looked at mine this weekend while inder there and was I surprised to see rust! Not normal surface rust, it's rust I can flake off. It's just now 2 years old and I've never seen a diff cover rust like that!

 

Yes, you are seeing rust. The rust is due to the heat, moisture, & weathering the differantial sees. What a lot of people miss, is the fact that on a long run (>1hr) the differential can heat up to 215F or more. Mag Hytec offers diff covers for just about any of our trucks. After installing mine, the diff temp dropped >15F. In AZ summers, it used to get as high as 230F. Now, it will run 195F to 215F. This winter it max's ~180F.

I noticed the same thing on my 2000 when I was spraying mud off the underside of my truck. The paint on my diff was just flaking off with rust everywhere. I was a bit concerned but it sounds like it is a common occurence.
