New transmission installed. Drives in reverse not forward.

I own a 2002 F150 with the 4.2L V6. The transmission went out about 2 months ago and I just finished installing the new one. After installing I was ready to test drive. In reverse the truck drives as soon as I let off the brake like it's supposed to. When I put it in drive though, it will not move when letting off the brake and doesn't move until I push the gas heavily and even then it just barely moves. I'm not a huge car guy so I'm looking for ideas on what to look for that I may have done wrong or not hooked up properly. Any tips are much appreciated. Thank you.

Have you checked the transmission fluid levels?

How about the linkage from the shift selector?

Also, when you put the new transmission in, did that also include a new converter?

Give us some more details on this "new" transmission. used, rebuilt, remanufactured with warranty?

It was a remanufactured transmission with a warranty. It did come with a new converter as well. What do I need to check with the shift selector linkage?

Linkage should be fine if it has reverse and "tries" to go in drive. Have you tried manual 2nd and 1st? Is the OD OFF light blinking? Does it come on and off when you press the button?

OD OFF light would be the overdrive on the gear selector right? if so, it hasn't worked in months. It went out prior to the transmission going out.

That's too bad. If it flashes, that indicates a transmission fault which can be read out with an OBD2 scanner. You may want to scan it anyway and see if there are any transmission codes, you need a scanner that can read Ford transmission codes. Cheapest way is if you have an Android phone:

Thanks glc I'll check it out when I get home in the morning. If it doesn't work my dad has a scanner I can borrow. Any other thoughts?

Your dad's scanner may or may not be capable of reading Ford transmission codes. The basic cheap code readers are not.

Put it in manual 2nd gear. If it fails to engage properly and move, the "rebuilt" transmission has an internal fault. Probably a reassembly issue that's causing a loss of hydraulic pressure in the clutch circuits needed for forward operation.

Oh, the joys of using "rebuilt" parts! Look at E-Greed, there's tens of thousands of "remanufacturered" items on there that are still filthy and have broken cases and missing *****, etc. When I bought from places like Discount Auto Parts (not any more. Thank you!), about 60% of their "rebuilt" items don't work when I installed them. Labor is too expensive, from now on a seller has to convince me that the item was actually rebuilt and by someone that knew that they were doing, and not just wiped off and then put up for sale. The next time that you're thinking of buying a "rebuilt" transmission, open it up before you install it and take a look inside. I think you'll be surprised!

Rant off.

Then you'll still need to do more testing and evaluation so you can better define what is and isn't working correctly. If you cannot explain the issue well, then you cannot get accurate advice.
