Question Fluid change

My local transmission charges $120.00 to change fluid on my 99 F150 that requires Mercon V. They drop the pan, drain torque converter, and replace filter. It only cost $72.00 last week to do the same job on my 95 F250 diesel which uses Mercon. Is Mercon V fluid more expensive ? I was surprised at the difference in price just because they required differen types of fluid.

Ask the dealer or shop there why it cost more. Your 250 may have a drain plug in the pan making the job easier, thus cheaper.

If you are worried about the price, then spend the money on some tools, a shop manual, fluids, a funnel and a huge drain pan and do the job yourself! You can save a TON of money doing your own maintenance! Oil changes, fluid changes, tuneups, brakes those are all easy items to do at home that really save a lot of money!

I just changed my tranny fluid and filter (and torque converter fluid) this past Sunday...total cost was $72.00. Filter was $28.95 + tax from FORD.

Mercon V ranges between $2.25 and $2.97 at Wal-Mart or your local auto store. About 13 quarts are needed for the 4x2 5.4L 4RW70 tranny (about 1-1.5 quarts are trapped in the system without a tranny flush).

There are very detailed instructions at www.F150 w o r l d.com under the "how-to" link.
