On the way home it shifted first and second as long as I had the shifter in 2, I had passing gear too. By the time I got home it felt like I only had second.

There is no "passing gear". It downshifts to a lower gear when needed.

When the shifter is in 2, it should not have 1st gear, that's a true manual 2nd. I would suspect the MLPS.
