Trans fault alert question

You
I just purchased a 2005 f150 stx 4x4 and I am getting the ever popular trans fault alert and o/d off alert combo. It causes zero drivability issues and everything operates perfectly, transmission shifts strong engine runs smooth, everything. I'm basically trying to find out any information on this to curb taking it to a mechanic and getting charged for something that's most likely a bad 30 to 50 dollar speed sensor or something of the like. I don't have any meters and haven't had codes pulled so I'm just prodding around looking for ideas at this point and I'm sure this topic has been discussed before and perhaps someone has had a similar situation, any thoughts would help. Thanks

You don't have a choice. You have to pull the codes with a reader or scanner that can read Ford transmission codes.

Yeah I pretty much assumed I would have to, just curious if it was a commonplace issue that several have had and knew what it was, even though I'm sure its a toss up. Curious if it was a previous issue that's been fixed prior to me owning the truck and just needs a reset perhaps? I just find it very strange that it's sending the error and there are literally zero obvious symptoms. Im hoping I can hunt down a friend who has one instead of fighting with a dealership.

Each time you get the warnings it means the problem is present right then. Resetting the codes will only turn it off until the next time it sees the fault, which from what you have said would be immediate.

There are several faults that need to be fixed but will not have obvious symptoms. For example, if the temperature sensor in the transmission fails the PCM will substitute engine temperature. That will keep you going, but is far from ideal.

Most good independent repair shops would be able to read these codes and usually charge a lot less than a dealer.
