Anybody installed a Tremec T-5?
Hey everyone,
I read in a thread not long ago a suggestion of installing a T-5(?) for a Mustang in an F150. Anybody know if this would work? It doesn't sound like a bad idea, considering the issues a lot of people have with Ford's Mazda gearbox. I've had my '98 SuperCab Lariat 5-speed for a little over a month now and I would sure like a smoother, quicker-shifting tranny. Even if it would physically bolt up, would the factory shifter work, or would we be reaching down below the dash to shift? I'm just trying to think ahead to what I might want to do to this truck in the future. I don't want a screaming hot-rod, but man, I can't get quick enough shifts to leave anybody from a light.
P.S. Does anybody besides me wish there was another gear between first and second?

I too was wondering this! I remember reading that member "eph1fifty" was going to try to do it, but unfortunately he sold his truck . Hopefully he'll see this thread and pass on whatever info he had gathered on this swap. Man it would be a big plus is the T-5 would bolt up without any major fabricating! I remember reading on a Ranger board a few people swapping their tranny's for a T-5, and installing a B&M or Hurst short throw shifter and mounting the stock shift lever to the short throw and it work perfectly! Hopefully we could do the same on our trucks!

So are you saying that the T45 would be a direct bolt-up for an F150 4.6, or would the bellhousing still be wrong? Could the Mustang's bellhousing be used on our motors? Would the shifter line up? And, what kind of gear ratios do those trannies run compared to the F150's? I'm assuming that 1st in a T45 isn't near as low as the 3.90 ratio in my 5-speed. Are they geared for low rpm torque? I'd almost bet that you'd have to run a 4.10 in the rear for it to still behave like a truck. Does Hurst or somebody else make a short-throw shifter that would fit an F150? I know, I came up with more questions, but I'm guessing you're pretty knowledgeable in this area. If anybody else has experience or info, please respond also. Thanks to everybody!

first in the newer trannies is a 2.90 I believe. That is what most T5s have. The shifter is in the rear of the tranny, so you would have to cut up your floor boards and make a custom tranny mount.
No on makes a short shifter for the F150s at the present time, so you are SOL there.
Your best bet is to stick with the stock tranny, shift it nicely and treat it to synthetic fluids. 77k and now problems on mine.

what transmission do the 3.8 mustangs use? i thought it was some variation on a t-5... i'm assuming that the 3.8 and 4.2 have the same bolt pattern, and the 4.2 must be the same as the modular v8's because they all fit the same autos transmissions.
i've thought alot about this too, especially because my roomate has a brand new t-5 with 29 miles on it that he may be getting rid of...

oh, i just checked with tremec and they make a transmission called a TR-3350 that has similar ratios to the m50d (3.81,2.30,1.45,1.00,0.78) and can handle 350 ft-lbs torque... they also claim its designed for light-duty trucks... i'm assuming it has the same exterior dimensions/bolt patters as a T-5; this might be a good choice for us... check it out:

That TR-3350 sounds like it was tailor-made for an F150 (ratios almost identical, various shifter configurations). So who's first to try it? Oh, and what's the monetary impact (how much is the sucker)? And, would we have to get a Mustang bellhousing? Who's gonna be the lucky guinea pig? Let's go for it!!!

Oooo, Mustang tranny stuff. Forget all the T-5 and 3550/TKO stuff. It's for Windsor blocks. I think if you want a tough manual, Ford is selling a T-56 six-speed that goes in the Cobra R. Thats a DOHC 5.4 so the bellhousing should be doable. Call D&D for info on Ford trannies. They know their stuff. I can get you a number if you want..
