No shift pass 2nd

06 4r75w 4x4 truck won't shift pass second gear but if I manually move from D to 2 it shifts pass second ok am puzzled I think maybe a solenoid but not sure. Not showing any codes on my reader trying to stay away from dealer.

So what does it do when it doesn't shift? Does it just stay in gear? Does it seem like it goes into neutral?

Much more info please

Thanks for the inquiry. It not slipping or anything erratic it just won't go to the next gear automatically, rpm goes up if I push on pedal, I change the shift, tcc and control solenoids in the pan also the oil and filter but no change.

Looking at your question again it does act like it's in neutral but the shifter doesn't move from D unless I move it. I also replaced the range sensor.

My thoughts are the valve body, but Mark Kovalsky may have good/better input. Hopefully he will show up to answer.

Hey Darrin thanks again for helping, what's the best way if it is the valve body would it be best to change it or clean the old one.

That doesn't make any sense.

When the shifter is in 2 it will only operate in second gear. It will not shift past 2.

Ok it's odd trying to put in writing but let me rephrase, when I start driving in D everything is OK until I get up to about 25 mph and the truck should shift to the next gear, it doesn't, the RPM goes way up as am pushing on the pedal but if I manually move the lever to 2 tht truck shifts in whatever gear it was trying to do in D. And it seems to drive OK in 2 until I put it back in D. Thanks for responding

When the shift is in 2 it will NOT shift to 3rd gear, it will stay in second.

Since your RPMs go way up when it tries to shift the 3rd gear, that tells me the direct clutch has failed. If it were the valve body I would expect that when it should shift to 3rd gear it would stay in second and the RPMs will continue to rise, but in proportion to the vehicle's acceleration.
