4r70W problem / interchange

Have a 2000 F150 2WD w/4.2L. Truck has 62k and tranny started slipping out of drive at stop lights sometimes. If put into manual low it takes off fine but if left in drive it has to rev up before lurching forward. About 500 miles later it started downshifting from Od to 2nd without warning. Sometimes the OD light flashes. I dropped the pan and found no metal, gunk or anything but clean fluid. Is low mileage failures common? I have read that Ford improved this tranny in 2001-20003. If true would it be better to get a 01-03 and change this out. I would normally have someone rebuild but locally our shops are quite frankly not very good and have really dirty repair facilities. Any ideas I would appreciate. thanks

If you decide to change it out, you can use an 01-03 out of a 4.2l. You have to make sure to only get one from a like setup of drive wheels. A 2wd transmission will not swap in if you have 4wd and vice versa.

03 is better. Slightly.
