AOD converter early lockup

I dont know much about this tranny.....not sure how it locks the converter.
anyway...it shifts fine...however as soon as it shifts into 3rd ...at the same time or very close to it the lockup comes in. the tach will drop from 1800 down to 1100 at 23mph and it just falls on its face. the tach will not gain RPM until the vehicle increases in speed so i know its locking up somehow..... not sure if this can be adjusted in the TV cable....any ideas?

That's the way an AOD works. Either live with it or get something else. It isn't adjustable.

Older Ford automatics with lockup converters all do it. Ever driven an Escort or a Tempo/Topaz? They shift to 3rd and immediately lock up.

No....that's cool. I can deal with it. Now that I know it's supposed to be this way.

The AOD doesn't have a lockup clutch, so there is no possible way to change when it applies. It has a long shaft with splines on both ends that directly connects the torque converter with the direct clutch. So the way that it works is that you are truly and immediately 1:1 as soon as the direct clutch (3rd gear) applies.
