Trans went out today

I was driving down the Highway with cruise set at 70 mph. Got off on a exit and notice a whining noise. Came to a stop light and that was it. Trans would barely engage felt like it was slipping real bad. Luckily I was able to get it to the side of the road. turned it off check for leaks no leaks. Check fluid level and it was fine. Started it back up and nothing no forward or reverse. Put in 4 high and low nothing. Got it towed to a trans shop now waiting on the new.

2004 5.4 4X4 Lariat 98000 miles. I just got the truck a month ago.

Any ideas? I did some searches sounds expensive.

So the shop called me and and went threw and checked what they could and dropped the pan and didn't find the issue. Gave them permission to drop the trans to further investigate.

That's tough luck. Trans failure right after buying it! But that is the risk of buying a used 10 year old truck. I bought mine when it was 7 yrs old with 69k miles and have been lucky so far.

Got called this evening and trans shop said the torque converter failed and damaged clutches and some other stuff. Recommend complete rebuild trans and new torque converter. Also said my shifter cable was in bad shape and recommend replacing that.
About $2400 out the door.
So about right?
Does a torque converter fail cause issues with the rest of the trans?

Yes, a torque converter failure can and will take out the rest of the transmission. That price is about average.

Unfortunately a lot of us don't check in as often as we should or someone probably would have replied to your questions sooner. Sorry about that.

Like Mark said on all counts.

Thanks for the replies!
So got another call just now the shop recommends replacing radiator because they have flushed it several times and still has junk coming out of it. Don't want to take a chance and end up ruining a newly rebuild trans.
Gonna run over there and talk to them and take a look before saying yes but most likely gonna tell them to do it. Sucks more cause I could do the radiator swap.

There isn't much in the radiator it can't possibly be holding that much junk.

Patman thanks for the info but I went ahead and told them to replace the radiator. I felt if I did have the shop replace it then if something went wrong he wouldn't warranty it.
He charging me a additional $250 I looked up a radiator and its about $210.

Thanks Darrin.

Got the truck back yesterday afternoon. So far so good put about 30 miles on it drives good and shifts good. Shop said take the truck back to them in about two weeks so they can check it over make sure no leaks or any other issues.
Rebuilt trans, new converter, shifter cable, and radiator. $2586.00 out the door.

Now to get back on track I have new struts, springs and leveling kit to install.

I'm going to tell you that if the work they did is good that you got a really fair price on that. Sounds like they did it right and I'm glad you chose to replace the radiator.

Hopefully it will be the last time you have to deal with transmission issues on it.
