04 FX4 Shift Netraul to Reverse

Ok, I'll try to do my best to explain what is going on. Today I noticed that when I shift my truck from drive to reverse (while stopped of course) it won't catch the gear. The truck looks like it's in reverse, but it's still in neutral I have to go to park then back to reverse to get the truck to back up. Does anyone have any ideas if this is linkage between the shifter or do I have transmission problems? I already have the "cam phaser" noise that makes me worry like hell about my truck. It currently has 108K miles on it and other than that is running great.

Thanks in Advance,

jay0555

update: this morning pulled out of the driveway, went to put it in reverse. Now it won't go in any gear. No matter what I do with the shifter, it's in neutral.

Either the linkage has become disconnected, the trans leaked out all the fluid, or the trans is dead. It's one of those.

yep, it was the linkage. I was able to purchase the cable for $60 at ford yesterday and I got it changed out last night. The rubber boot under where it connects to the transmission was worn. Thanks everyone for the quick responses.

Thanks,

I am having the same issue, any details on how you fixed it would be great. I mean I know you purchased the cable, etc. Is this a difficult fix for a DIY or is this something that would need to be done by an experienced mechanic or the dealership? Any info would be great! Thanks

The top of the console unsnaps and you cn see where it connects to the shifter. Disconnect it there and follow it through the floor. Run the new cable the same path and connect it to transmission. I would definintly recommend doing it yourself especially if your truck is not driveable. I am not a mechanic by any means, but this was an easy task.

I was idling in the driveway in reverse. As I eased back, I heard a loud "clanck"! Thought I hit something, so drove forward a foot, got out and found nothing. Now it won't go into reverse. Anyone have similar problems? It is a 2005 FX4 Crew Cab.
Thanks in advance!
