05 4.6L 4x4 Trans gave out (I think)

Here's the story,

My 05 F150 has 155k on the odo, never had an issue with it so far (no slipping etc) I just did a major service on it at 150k (plugs, trans filter, plug boots)

Tuesday I was driving home from work and the truck shuddered at about 50 mph (not hot rodding) and lost all forward drive (motor free rev'd), I was 1/2 mile from home so I put the truck in neutral and allowed it to coast as far as it would. Trans fault came on with 2 codes (VSS and Throttle pedal out of range). Cut the truck off and restarted and tried to limp it the remaining 300 ft to my driveway in 2wd, no luck, so I stuck it in 4Lo and limped it up the hill, worked about as well as always. Parked truck.

Yesterday I got out in it and tried reverse and 4Hi, Reverse works great, 4 Hi is as bad as 2wd, it just sits there and shudders when put into drive 2 or 1.

Am I right in assuming this is a transmission replacement job? I haven't fooled with any Electronic transmissions ever, I like my stuff as non complex as possible.
Where can I get a good rebuilt transmission? cheap(relativity speaking)?
Can I replace the 4r70e with the 4r75e? Cannot believe this question hasn't been answered already (at least not in the 20 posts I checked) as finding a 4r70e for a 4x4 seems almost impossible.

Relevant Vehicle info:
-05 F150 X-cab STX (01/05 build date, VA built)
-4.6L
-4R70E Transmission with manual shift transfer case
-6 qts of Castrol Synthetic Trans fluid with filter replacement (done in May of 2011)

Call around and talk to shops in your area. When you get price quotes remember the cost of a rebuild kit is less then $150 fluid, filter shop supplies is another $150 so parts cost for the shop is about $300. I would pay about 2 grand for a transmission overhaul and thats it.

You can try these guys. A bit more than the avergae rebuild, but should be a bulletproof option.

The same exact thing happened to me, but my truck only had 98k on it. It had never slipped or acted like it was going out before, but one day accelerating out of a left turn I got it up to about 45mph and it started slipping. Started up a hill and it finally it gave out like I shifted it into neutral. Reverse worked fine but put it in drive and it would grind and inch forward. Long story short I took it to my local transmission shop and they told me the 1st gear clutch went out and they could rebuild it for about $2400. I ended up buying a used one from Nordstrom's Automotive for $900 with about 53k on it.
