04 F150 Lost overdrive, servo clip broke
http://www.f150online.com/forums/tra...roke-pics.html

ISSUE
2004 Ford F150 lost overdrive, some of the symptoms of this include:
• No overdrive
• Shift right into neutral
• Not able to engine brake into 2nd gear
• If you turn of OverDrive, you can drive normally within the first three gears
This was caused by the overdrive servo retaining clip snap and lodged into the a valve on the valve body

Thanks Tim. After further inspection, I found it. Will reassemble next weekend. I think I might as well put a new pressure control solenoid in. I'll order this week. Thanks again for your help.

I recently had the broken snap ring issue....got it fixed but when i pulled the valve body off a couple things fell out. on the passenger side rear there's a part that resembles a thermostat and then a spring on top. my question is what holds this up in the trans case? did i lose a spring that should be between the thermostat looking thing and valve body?

Mine fell out as as well. I haven't gotten to the reassembly, I think that is called the 2-3 accumulator piston and the part that fell out is the accumulator retainer and spring. I think it catches when you push it up in there. I could be wrong.

Thanks for the pics you posted up! Helped me figure out why I lost overdrive after the VB install ( I removed the OD servo by accident thinking it was something else) Well after dropping the VB for the 3rd time i saw I had to align it and now it works like a charm.. thanks again!

it stays up there barely but what keeps it from falling away from the spring above it....seems there should be another spring between it and valve body.
i'm asking because i have mine back together and driving. it shifts fine and od works now but i have a terrible rattle coming from the trans that wasn't there before but only does it when easing into the pedal...this is the only thing i can think of that i wasn't sure about going back together...need some help figuring this out.

That Retainer has little tabs on it. I bent them out slightly to fit snug going in.
My problem now: I just put mine back together. Only had 3 qrts of ATF to add. Started it up and tried all the gears and it did nothing. After rereading this post, I see this happened to you as well. I am going to let it sit overnight, add another qrt of ATF and try the idle, reverse and drive. I hope it's just not enough fluid. I really don't want to drop that pan again.

you'll need at least 6qts to even register on the dipstick if you dropped the trans pan..guess im dropping mine again to bend the tabs alittle

kudos to you for attempting to fix the O/D ring. Thanks for posting pics!!!!!
i had the similar issue but the difference was after one minute of driving i lost all gears(like being in neutral) until i turned O/D off, then it drove fine. i paid 1700 washingtons for a rebuild. all for a $3 part. thats great

Yup he is right. In fact you need to avoid starting it until the fluid does register on the dipstick.

You can start it - just don't put it in gear.

Well, I'm happy to report. I added a total of 8 qtrs of ATF and still a 1/2 qrt low but, I have all gears and overdrive.. No rattles and it shift fine... I wanted to thank everyone for all their guidance and help.. Plus, saving $900 on labor makes me smile

I have 2002 f150 4x4 with no OD sounds like this could be my problem also.Is this transmission in this thread the 4R70W?
When OD was lost was there any warnings?
