2001 f-150 xlt 4.2l aod

Shifting a little rough both up and downshifting. My son says could be filter?
Any ideas?

Thanks for responding. Here is more info I should have included in the original question. I have owned the truck for about a month I bought it from a private party with 138K miles. He told me the transmission had be replaced recently. (Don't know time frame, but fluid looks like new) Doesn't rattle the truck when it shifts, but definitely is not a smooth as it should be. Thanks for any other comments. It also is idling rough intermittenly. Normally idles at 700 rpm, but on occasion, when stopped at light it will start to surge so bad I have to shift to neutral. Codes P0171 and 0174 (lean on both banks)

Check for vacuum leaks.

Running lean will cause the engine to be low on power. The transmission controller expects a certain power level at a given throttle position and sets the pressure for the shift based on this expectation. Since the power isn't there you have too much pressure for a smooth shift. Fix the engine problem and the trans will be fixed, too.
