Shift indicator off on dash.

I have a 2002 F-150 Super Crew 4X4. It seems to drive and shift great but I have noticed the shifter is off by a position. When I am in Reverse the indicator shows on the N, and (over) Drive the indicator is in 2. I cannot shift down to 1. There is alot of play in the shifter as well I would say 1/2 inch of movement when the truck is in gear, I can move the shift lever up and down.

Anyone have any ideas??? I hope this is a linkage issue and not a major Trans issue. Thanks for your help and advise.

Go to technical articles and look up PRND12 pointer fix.

It's not the pointer fix.

It's either loose Torx-head bolts or worn shifter tube bushings.

Plug "Torx" and my username into the Advanced Search tool.

Tried the Fix

I checked the screws and they were tight, the whold assembly moves. Are there any screws further up that may be loose that hold it together?

As suggested above, this is in the index of Articles and How To. Give it a try.

I agree with projectSHO89, there are at least 6 torx screws to check as well as the shifter tube plastic bushings may be squashed/worn out. Some earlier models had weak shifter tubes that would break causing hard or no shift at all problems. The pointer adjuster won't cause the shifter not to shift to low. The pointer fix would be applied after your "not shifting to low" is repaired.

Well, thanks for all the information, I have issues with all the above. I dug into the column and all screws were tight, bushings between clamps and tube, shot. Also, one bracket on the pointer adjustment is broken. I rigged the pointer to be more accurate and I also am able to shift into 1st, I don't really ever do that so it is not that big of a deal.
Can you just replace the bushings or since you have to drop the column anyway would you suggest replacing the tube and bushings just so you don't have to worry in the future, will also have to replace the pointer(maybe).

You should be able to get away with just the bushings if the tube hasn't worn into the bushing clamps. If there's feel-able wear at all between the two I'd replace the pieces with wear reason being even with new bushings I've found them not to be that tight when clamped. They can't be too tight or it would make it stiff to shift. You should also check the tube and shaft for signs of bending or cracks from age. Don't forget to grease the bushings when installing.
