Is the tranny in the 4.2 the same as the tranny in the 4.6?

I already know the tail shaft and the bellhousing is different. My question is does it the same internals?
Here is my problem. I have a 2001 F150 SCrew. 4.6 (Romeo) It will go into reverse but I have no drive. I found a tranny out of a 2000 4.2 20,420 miles on it. (the guy told me it was the same.) It is not.... Bolt holes do not match up. Mine has 3 bolts for starter 4.2 = 2. The cheapest I can find to rebuild mine is $1700. I have already paid $450 for the 4.2. My question is... Can I take the internals out of the 4.2 and put them in the 4.6?

Also. what type of tranny is in my 4.6? The only #'s I can find are on the tailshaft and the plate on the side.

Here are the #'s on the plate.

They are both 4R70W, but the bellhousings are different between the 2 engines.

Thanks glc. I know this is not the proper way but do you think the internals are the same. As far as length and such? Would they fit? Thanks again.

I'm not certain, but I think the 4.2L may have less plates in the clutches. This might lead to a short life if those internals were used in a 4.6L trans. They just may not be strong enough.

The biggest cost in a rebuild is the labor. Tearing down one trans and using those parts to build another trans is more labor than just rebuilding the one you have. My recommendation is to sell the 4.2L trans and rebuild that 4.6L trans.
