Transmission Rebuild
Transmission Rebuild
Well, it has been 6 months since the truck was rear ended (long story and my fault, you can search the threads). Since the accident reverse has been super slow to engage. I figure a snap ring was busted inside. Now I am getting a severe slip when trying to drop to passing gear. The engine winds up and when she catches the gear it kicks your *** back in the seat! Definitely not a good thing lol! For you Texas folks I found a link to the following business:
http://transmissionheaven.com/plain-...95-store2.html
Labor is a flat $395 + parts to drop it, replace the internals and re-install her. They are giving a $100 off on Labor reducing that to $295. They also have a deal with Enterprise for rentals cars locked in at $30 per day. With an appointment the rebuild will be done in 24 to 48 hours. I want to do forced induction in the new year so I asked about a built transmission. The mechanic suggested a higher stall converter and the red band clutch packs. He mentioned it would be a few hundred dollars more and I am seriously considering it. I plan to drop the truck off this week and I will let you guys know about the customer service and my experience when she is done.
Stay tuned!

I'd look a lot more closely. TransmissionHeaven.com, TransmissionCiti.com, TranOne.com, etc., appear be a series of associated web sites that just act as a referral service for local shops and tack on extra cost. If you search around some you'll find some complaints against them for bait and switch-type practices. They are deceptive IMO in not disclosing that and raise some big red flags with low-ball flat-rate pricing and various other things like claiming that they have a BBB A+ rating when they aren't even listed in Houston/South TX and they aren't even the group doing the work.
Sorry, but NOBODY is going to drop, rebuild, and reinstall a trans for $395. Anybody who gives you a low-ball, labor-only rate like that is just going to ream you for parts and other costs. Ask around and find a good local shop who will quote you a total fixed price for the job in writing including all parts, labor, fluids, shop fees, towing, etc. Any reputable shop knows what it costs to rebuild an F150 trans. If they don't, then you don't want to take it there.
Also, have them quote you a flat price for diagnosis/tear-down separately so you know what you're into them for before they have your truck taken apart and you can't easily move it. Standard procedure for a lot of sketchy trans shops to "unexpectedly" find problems and expensive parts needed and then raise the price by $1,000 once they have you on the hook.
* Edit to add:
Actually it's even worse than I thought on first look. Search for "TranOne" and read these links:

Thank you fro the heads up man. You are spot on with regards to the lack of disclosure, mis-leading advertisements and the other unsavory tricks these shops use. I was the victim of a very deceptive transmission shop in my early twenties and to make it worse, the used car dealer that sold me the car was in cahoots with the transmission shop! This was the "one lesson" that taught me to "Look before I leap". I will save you the verbose run down, so the short is I bought the car. The transmission failed and the dealer sent the car to a local shop and for the next four months they couldn't rectify the issue, nor would the dealer replace the car under the lemon law. Being a young man of few resources and even less knowledge about the law and business, I took it up the **** and finally coughed up the $3000 to replace it (Volkswagen). In the process I had managed to retain a lawyer for $1500 which equivocated to drowning worms in the lake all the while thinking you are going to catch a fish lol.
That being said, I re-read what I wrote and I was not clear about the $395 fee. This was only the fee to drop the transmission and go through it. The other shops I checked with charge anywhere from $325 to $400 to do the same. If you elect to have the shop repair the transmission then the fee is rolled into the total cost.
I requested a couple quotes for a built transmission that would handle between 450 and 500 flywheel hp (forced induction). One quote with a performance rebuild kit (Alto reds) and new valve body and the other with the kit with the same items and an upgraded stall converter. I have read on this site the the OEM tranny will hold up for a while, maybe the life of the vehicle under forced induction, but then I have also read about plenty of guys blowing them up. Since this is my DD and I know that I like to mash the go pedal a little more than the average Joe (not during my commute LOL) I elected to get this done. I have always driven my vehicles a little on the hard side ergo you gotta pay to play. He gave me $2612.41 with out the stall converter and $3241.xx with the stall converter (2500 RPM I think it was). I went with the lesser of the two as the stall converter exceeds the budget. 2yr/24k warranty.

Transmission Installed
I have had the built transmission in the truck for 24 hours and I have about 75 miles on it so far, around town and highway. I immediately notice the quicker and firmer shifts. The vehicle responds well even in overdrive. I need to get the Edge installed and see change the shift points to put it through its paces. I will keep ya'll posted.
Transmission Update
I have about 250 miles on the transmission now. Shifting is fantastic with zero delay between gears. OD is impressive as I feel no slip at all and it is very quick to drop out of OD when I need it to. I drove a friends 2009 Ram 1500 Hemi with a bullydog programmer Saturday. That truck felt very responsive. 70-90 leaves my truck in the dust, but the dodge has an extra gear (5spd vs. 4spd). Shifts were precise and smooth on his truck. I would really like to get the tuner on my truck this week and change the stupid shift points. Once my truck hits 2nd gear at 40 it falls on its face. Very annoying. If you are going 30 in second the truck will not drop to first if you hammer it, also super annoying. I will search the forums to see the recommended shift points. I understand I probably shouldn't spin the engine over 5400 RPM so as to avoid any ballooning of the torque converter, however the new converter is a 2100 RPM stall vs the factory 1800... More to come
Mr. Transmission update
Well folks, we are well into October and I am posting a quick follow up.
I haven't noticed any significant increase in mileage, but over all drive ability has been fantastic. I think I will get the edge next week and install it. The transmission already has an upgraded shift kit so I am curious to see how this will affect anything. If anything I am looking forward to canceling that torque management crap lol. Consider this my recommendation for anyone in the greater Houston Area needing transmission service be it repair, rebuild or upgrade. Go visit Mr. Transmission on 2920 in spring.
