2001 f150 trans no 3rd or 4th gear
Hey guys, i have a 2001 f150 supercrew with a 5.4 2wd 4r70 trans. i got the truck from the original owner with the infamous no 3rd or 4th gear problem. after looking around online i decided i would try to replace the 2-3 accumulator in hopes that would fix the issue. but it did not. the other thing i should mention is the 2-3 accumulator did not have a cir clip holding it in place. when i dropped the valve body, the retainer plate and the spring came down with the valve body. but the accumulator was still in the case of the trans. so i called around to a few different places and got mixed responses on if the clip was supposed to be there or not. but i never found or saw a clip from the 2-3 so i just reassembled it with the new accumulator and the truck is still doing the same thing. shifts from 1-2 then revs to about 3-3500 rpm, then fails into neutral. other than the 2-3 issue the trans feels fine, no slipping or anything like that. so before i yank the trans out. i wanted to see if anyone on here had a similar issue or a remedy,
also, will a 4.6 4r70 run behind a 5.4 that had a 4r70 as in, are the transmissions interchangeable or is something different?
Thanks guys,

You definately have a issue with the direct clutch assy. (which btw is the weak link in this trans.)
Recommend to rebuild with Transgo HD-2 reprogramming kit and Alto direct clutch upgrade kit. Once these upgrades are done, this is not the worst automatic out there. Quite the opposite actually.
