which trans do I have?
which trans do I have?
Question guy, I have a 2000 F150 4x4 with the triton 5.4 I want to change my trans fluid and filter along with transfer case fluid. I see that the shop book calls for Mercon if it is a 4R100 and Mercon V if it is not.
Which tans is in this truck?

Odds are that you have the 4R70W. Look at the transmission code in the cert label on the B pillar. U = 4R70W E = 4R100 Ford stopped making the Mercon so you can now use the Mercon V regardless of the transmission.
Thank you! I will check it out later. Is it bad to do a fluid change on a high mileage tranny? I bought the truck with 125,000 on the clock and now it has 145,000 It shifts fine even though it has soft shifts and seem a tiny bit delayed between shifts but no slipping. Fluid is pinkish but smells so I want to change it along with the filter.
I also assume switching to a synthic fluid is bad?
The shop manual states it hold 14 qts I think, is that witht he converter and can it be drained?

A 2000 should have a drain plug on the torque converter. Use any Mercon V, it's mostly synthetic anyway. Do not replace the pan gasket, the factory gasket is meant to be reused and is better than any replacement.
Like glc said, even at 145K I'ld drain all you can from both pan and TC on that 2000, new filter, and likely 12-13 qts Mercon V ... maybe more (not sure on pan).
Mercon V is good stuff.
