e4od short shifting second.

I have a 90 f150 with e4od trans. It has a complete rebuild on the trans with a few extras. Like a 3 clutch overdrive pressure plate (oem was 2 clutch). 3 clutch intermediate backing plate (again oem was 2) and cushion plate was left out of forward so that extra friction could be installed in the forward drum. Now I'm quoting the invoice from the tranny shop that did the work. And have a limited idea as to what this all means. However my issue with the trans is that it short shifts second no matter the throttle input. It won't allow it to rev over 2800 rpm before it goes into third. Also it was the previous owner that had the work done and there is less than 5k miles on the rebuild. Fluid looks great. And also, would any of the work done cause the trans to shift hard? Any and all help in helping me understand this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What shop did the work? I'm not personally familiar with any of the tranny shops around here, but I do know a couple guys who could tell me if they know what they are doing or not. Being an E4OD, it could be an electronics issue.

The PCM tells the E4OD when to shift. If it shifts early it has to be a problem with the PCM or a sensor feeding info to the PCM.

Thanks guys. Glc frank's transmission in Baxter Springs did the work. I went ahead and called him and he seemed to think that is was fine. he also explained the whole cushion plate thing. i guess the forwards cushion plate was left ouy in order to put extra clutches in it. so im pretty satisfied with the firmness of the shifting. but im still curious as to the short shifting. if it is a sensory problem then which sensors should i be looking towards? there are recent recent receipts in the glove box for almost all of the sensors having been replaced. the engine was rebuilt at the same time and from what i can see all of the sensors appear to be new, but we all know that sensors can be bad from the get go. Thanks again guys!!

Yes it will hold manual second. also I noticed when i was checking the trans fluid. I was running through the gears with my foot on the brake, I put in drive and it engaged fine then I went to second and it shifted into second!!! That seems a little strange to me since it should already be in first (drive.) so I went back to park and repeated the same process and the same result. this time I let off the brake and gave it some gas and it downshift To first. if im to understand the guy at the tranny shop, he says there is a total of 11 clutches in the trans. is this possible? And would it be the cause of some of this weirdness?

Ok so that would explain why I felt it shift into second from drive. but when I gave it gas it went to first then second and held. Aw screw it ill run it until it goes and buy a new one. I hear TCI builds a damn good E4OD. thanks for the help!

If I were gonna buy a built tranny, I'd get it from Darrin Burch in Indiana.
