Another No Overdrive Problem

Lost overdrive with no warning the other day. When it shifts to o/d it revs as if neutral and no engine braking in 2nd. I dropped the pan and valve body and found that the o/d snap ring had broken both ends off but was still in place. I replaced the snap ring but there was also a spring and metal cap that is cone shaped in the center fell out when I removed the valve body. I put the spring and cap back in but the cap was to small for the hole. So I bent the tabs on the cap out some and placed it back in its spot even with the botom of the transmission. Put everything back together, new filter and trans fluid and still no overdrive. I removed the top of the valve body when it was out and didn't find any broken pieces of snap ring in there, should I have pulled the metal plate off the bottom of the valve body also and checked there. Please let me know if I missed anything. I really don't want to have to take it in for a rebuild.

Thanks, Spencer

Yeah, you missed something and most likely it's the OD band not seated right. You have to use a long thin screwdriver or something to push the OD band to where it's "pocket" will catch on the OD servo pin. So if you just pushed the OD servo back into it's bore without making sure you caught the pocket on the band then that is your problem. I see that a lot.

Or, if you are sure that you seated the OD band right, then there is still a piece of snap ring inside the valve body. I see this one a lot too. Even from reputable shops.
