1998 tranny slipping, valve body?

I have a 1998 F-150 super crew with a transmission code E (e40d?) built 10/97 and the 5.4 with 3.73 axle. It also has the drain plug in the torque converter. I use it to tow a 4500# camper and other smaller trailers. It has the factory tow package with tranny cooler and I put an additional tranny cooler inline after it(now 2 coolers each same size). Two years ago, the transmission was rebuilt with new solenoid pack (which I believe the mechanic meant valve body) with all new clutches and internals at 118k miles. At that time, I was pulling a small 5 X 8 enclosed trailer and the transmission started to slip in od, then 3, then would only pull in 2. He said the solenoids were sticking, not allowing the clutches to fully engage, therefore burning out the clutches. After that, it worked fine. Fast forward to the present, I changed the fluid 1500 miles ago at 138k with mercon V with new filter. It has started to shift hard from 3 to OD and shifts very slowly from 2 to 3 and slips unless you let your foot off the gas to allow it to "catch". This situation is greatly worsened when I am pulling my camper this weekend, however, I don't pull using OD with it. I also can be pulling a hill and it doesn't want to engage from 1 to 2, (engine revs like it is out of gear) but if you get it to 3 and go to passing gear it works fine ( by letting off the gas). It seems to me the solenoids are sticking again and I want to try a new valve body with the solenoids. My question to the group is: am I on the mark and where can I get a valve body with possibly some mods for towing or just a good heavy duty component? I want to try this first before I let the mechanic tell me I need another rebuild. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Mine would slip like that as well. Troyer sold me a Transgo "tugger" shift kit. I cleaned up all accumulator bodies + pistons ( heavier springs and these were hanging IMO. Aluminum pistons ), Think there was 3 ? Yea, 2+ valve body. Flushed it out twice, once with Mercon, - once with Merc V (wanted to get rid of that stuff anyway) T fluid - reverse flushed cooler. Added Fords hard line/in line trans filter. Filled her up with Amsoil trans fluid with a little Red Lube and a some friction modifier (figured it couldn't hurt) - my own custom mix lol.

That was about 3 years ago. My E4OD has 302,000 miles on her now (original trans) .

Not sure if you have the same problem I had tho. Mine didn't rev like it was out of gear. It wouldn't brake torque, not even close. My fluid was good in color, but needed changing and it was heating up. I was slipping bad, real bad. My solenoid is still the original, -didn't change that, - probably should have, but it hasn't slipped since. I pull about 5000 lbs , - not all the time and the fluid doesn't get no where near as hot as it did at one time, - I recall not being able to touch the stick without getting burnt lol.

I didn't expect it to last that long after doing all that, but it's surprised me , - still doin it.

Good Luck.

Listening to all this slipping stuff reminded me of an electrical bug I once had , seems the circuit for lock up in a 4eod goes through the multifunction switch and causes lots of slipping problems and upshift problems . Also the TPS sender affects shifting . Infact anything that inputs to the PCM will influence the tranny in some way. The E in the designation means
electronic right?

Yes, the E in E4OD means it is an electronic transmission.
