Trans Concern

I have noticed, that when the weather gets cold, my '98 will surge forward at start-up. I have a 5.4, 4wd, E40d trans. Is this a common action, and is it an indicator of a problem to be corrected? If so, how is it done. Any information will be appreciated.

Possibly a torque convertor issue?

It's from fluid drag in the clutches. Synthetic fluid will eliminate most of this, it doesn't get as thick when it's cold.

Torque converter? Why does everyone think every trans issue is the torque converter? Is it because it is the only part of the transmission that they know?

sorry i dont know where else to post this but I have a 97 f150 4.6 i have had it for about a year and about 6 months ago I started having issues with the truck shifting into 4th gear (I think its 4th, it happens when i get to about 45-50) it felt like it would slip out and be in neutral for a second and then catch. At first it was a second and then it would catch and it has become longer and longer. For a while I have had to let go of the gas and when the rpms come back down it would shift in but today it wold not shift at all. I have read some stuff about taking off the O/D to eliminate 4th but I dont know if that will work or be good for the truck. Any suggestions??

on an unrelated note how do i post new thread with a question so I dont have to hijack someone elses, thanks

Open the appropriate forum, and on its index page you will see a ""New Thread" button.

For now, it would be best to turn off OD till you get the tranny fixed.

That's what I had to do today but I feel like I'm going to blow the engine if I go more than 50

The engine has a rev limiter so you can't overspeed the engine.

Thanks for the info. I changed the trans fluid and filter at 100k miles, but it didn't include the converter, or the trans lines. Gonna do it again at 150k, this spring. I think that will solve the problem.
