trans swap??

I have a 99 4x4 f150 with a 5.4 motor my automatic transmission lost its forward gears i just found a good truck that i can buy cheaper than a replacement transmission. The other truck is a 97 4x4 f150 with a automatic transmission. They both have the U code on the driver door and I know from reading hear the 5.4 and the 4.6 transmissions have the same bolt pattern. So I think I can physically make the swap but I am not 100% sure if electronics are the same. Does anyone know if this is a direct replacement or do I have to swap some on my tranny parts to new trans or am I retarded and this wont work at all. Please help me out if I want this truck I have to jump on it fast. Thanks so much in advance

The transmission connectors are different but it can be made to work. I will look up the connector pinouts and advise.

Your 1999 transmission connector #183 is different from the 1997. While both have 10 pins the 1997 uses 9 of the 10 pins and the 1999 only uses 7. If you match all the colours you will be left with 3 red wires on the 1997 transmission and 1 Violet with White stripe wire on the harness coming from the PCM in your truck. The 3 red wires must be connected to the Violet with White stripe wire.

FYI The 1997 Transmission uses 3 power wires (red) while the 1999 uses only 1 (Violet with White stripe).

In 98 they changed the electronics. You can swap the electronics from your transmission into the older one and make it work.

But, this is a very bad swap. The 97 transmission is not nearly as capable as the 99 and I would never advise anyone to make that step backwards in a million years.

can i change it electrics on the inside of the tranny or do i need the rewire my plugs i opened up the 99 tranny to look at the inside (under tranny pan) but have not looked at the 97 one yet. if you have a link especially one with picvts let me know. i think i see what i need to swap but not 100% sure it looks like a black piece of plastic that goes from side to side inside the tranny and hooks to one cylinoid that i can see.
